Changing Weather Patterns
Warm air will surge into the Finger Lakes region today as southwesterly flow takes over.
Skies will be sunny through the morning hours with just some thin clouds working in from the south. These clouds will likely increase this afternoon, but it probably will not get as cloudy as it did yesterday.
South and southwest winds will blow at speeds of 5-10 mph, helping push warmer air in.
The result of the sun and wind will be the warmest temperatures yet in 2024 for most areas. Afternoon highs will be widespread in the 70s, with many areas reaching the mid 70s. Even most hilltops should hit 70 degrees this afternoon.
Temperatures will slowly drop through the 60s and into the 50s this evening as some unsettled weather approaches from the west in the form of showers and a few thunderstorms.
It is a bit unclear how these showers and storms will evolve and when exactly they will move into our region. The best chance for rain will come after midnight, but an evening shower or storm cannot be ruled out, especially in more western and northern areas.
There is a very small chance that any storms could have some small hail or gusty winds.
Showers and perhaps a storm will continue to be possible into Wednesday morning. Just as their arrival time is a bit uncertain, so too is their departure. There is a chance that most of the rain could be out of the area during the early morning, or some showers may linger into the late morning and midday hours.
Either way, the afternoon Wednesday should be mostly dry with light and variable wind speeds. While not as warm as today, highs should still easily reach the mid 60s.
Breezy and Unsettled
The weather will remain unsettled for the foreseeable future, but it will not be raining consistently.
The next batch of rain will move through Wednesday night and early Thursday, followed by another round late Thursday, Thursday night, and early Friday. Periods of mainly dry weather and some breaks of sun are expected Thursday and Friday afternoons.
Winds will kick up on Thursday, coming in from the southeast with speeds of 15-20 mph. Wind gusts over 40 mph will become common Thursday afternoon, continuing Thursday night. Occasional gusts of 50 mph or more will be possible, as will some thunder and lightning.
Thursday will see highs reaching the upper 60s. A cold front early Friday morning will knock temperatures back to a high in the upper 50s.
Scattered showers are likely on Saturday, and if there is a day that turns out mostly wet, that may be it. Temperatures will mainly stick to the 40s.
The cool air is not expected to last with a jump to the upper 50s on Sunday. Some afternoon rain showers will be possible, with an outside chance for some thunderstorms.
An active, wet weather pattern is likely to persist for much of next week as well. Temperatures are uncertain, but should stay warm.
