Warm Front-Cold Front
A subtle warm front is lifting through the Finger Lakes this morning.
There are only a few clouds associated with this push of warmer air, but temperatures behind the front will be notably warmer than the last few days.
Expect temperatures to rise quickly this morning as a southwest wind establishes itself and warm air surges in.
By the afternoon, most of the area should be in the mid 80s with a few higher elevations sticking to the low 80s. Humidity levels will remain comfortably in the 50s.
The southwest wind will build to 10 mph this afternoon with a few gusts over 25 mph.
The evening will start clear, but showers and storms from the Upper Great Lakes and Canada will drop southeast toward the region overnight. Occasional showers and some rumbles of thunder will be possible, especially after midnight.
It will be a warm overnight with lows mainly in the mid 60s.
Rain showers may linger into Friday morning before diminishing for a time. New development of showers will be possible during the midday hours, mainly across the southern half of the region.
By the mid-afternoon, rain should be limited to isolated, small showers that will only last a few minutes in any given location. There should be some breaks of sun during the afternoon as well.
The rain will be associated with a cold front that will turn winds to the northwest during the middle of the day Friday.
Temperatures will be limited to the mid 70s Friday afternoon and will fall back to the mid 50s overnight with clearing skies.
Quiet Weekend, Hot Next Week
High pressure will cross the area this weekend, keeping the weather quiet and comfortable.
Saturday will be mostly sunny with highs in the low 70s. Northwest winds will continue from Friday with speeds around 10 mph and gusts around 25 mph.
Sunday will have nearly calm winds early with a south wind developing in the afternoon. A few thin clouds may pass through.
Sunday morning will start out chilly with most areas between 45-50 degrees. Highs will reach the upper 70s though.
The high pressure will move out over the northern Atlantic Ocean on Monday and strengthen. It will then remain in place off the coast of the United States throughout next week.
This setup will pull heat and humidity northward, resulting in a heat wave across the eastern United States, including our area.
A few areas may start to hit 90 degrees as early as Monday, though most of the Finger Lakes will probably end up in the upper 80s instead.
Highs in the 90s are likely Tuesday and Wednesday. The streak could very well extend into Thursday and Friday as well. Temperatures become less certain by next weekend.
A small disturbance may bring a few showers and thunderstorms Monday night and early Tuesday. Otherwise, precipitation will be scarce without any fronts or disturbances to upset the hot and humid airmass.
And it will be humid. Dewpoints will become borderline oppressive in the upper 60s and low 70s. This will yield heat index values near 100 degrees during the afternoons. It will also keep nighttime temperatures in the upper 60s and low 70s.
The prolonged heat, humidity, and lack of cooling at night will result in a risk for heat related illness, especially for at-risk populations.
Temperatures do look as though they will cool a little next weekend and the following week, but highs will likely still be well into the 80s.
