High Pressure Inbound
An area of high pressure will begin to build into the area today, replacing the persistent low that has been hanging around all week.
However, cool northwest winds between these two systems will continue to blow across the warm waters of the Great Lakes, keeping clouds plentiful throughout the daytime hours.
There may be a couple spits of lake effect rain this morning, but these should be few and far between and becoming less common. By midday, the chances of rain will be nearly zero and the afternoon is expected to remain dry.
Wind speeds will be similar to the other days this week, clocking in around 10 mph with gusts over 20 mph.
The thick clouds and northwest winds will make today the coolest day of the week. Highs will range from the mid 50s along and north of I-90, through the Genesee Valley, and in the valleys from Corning to Binghamton.
Most other areas will be in the low 50s this afternoon, though areas in and around Cortland County will struggle, and even fail in some cases, to reach 50 degrees.
Winds will become more westerly tonight, allowing dry air to move into the region. Many of the clouds should quickly dissipate after sunset, leaving mostly clear skies and areas of patchy fog.
Keep an eye on the skies tonight as a major solar storm is expected to be impacting the area, possibly leading to the northern lights.
But make sure to bundle up for your stargazing, as temperatures will quickly tumble through the 40s and, for the southern half of the region, into the 30s. Frost Advisories have been issued for these counties, from west to east:
Allegany, Steuben, Schuyler, Chemung, Tompkins, Tioga, and Cortland.
These areas should easily reach the mid 30s tonight and some pockets could approach the freezing mark by Friday morning.
Sunshine will rule the day on Friday with winds continuing a counter-clockwise turn to the southwest.
These winds, combined with the sunshine, should lead to a 30-35 degree jump in temperature from the morning to the afternoon. Highs will range throughout the 60s and a few of the typically warmer urban centers may even flirt with 70 degrees.

Weekend Cold Fronts
Clouds will increase Friday evening, and some scattered showers will develop during the overnight hours.
A few of these showers may linger into early Saturday morning but should quickly move out. With clouds, showers, and steady southwest winds, overnight lows Friday night will stay mild, with temperatures in the low and mid 50s to start Saturday.
Saturday afternoon will not be quite as warm as Friday as winds turn to the northwest behind the cold front responsible for the few showers. Most areas will be in the low and mid 60s with a few 50s in higher elevations.
Another system will move overhead on Sunday, bringing several periods of rain to the area. For many, it may be a lost day as far as outside activities go. Temperatures may still manage the low 60s, depending on the path of the low pressure system.
Behind the low, cool air will flood back into the region. As a whole, this shot of cold air will be more significant than the cold air we had this week.
In fact, most areas may only see highs in the upper 40s by Tuesday, while Monday and Wednesday are only a couple degrees warmer.
There will be additional chances for frost next week, and with lake effect precipitation possible, a few higher elevation snowflakes could be possible.
The weather should turn somewhat dramatically for the end of the week and next weekend, though, with highs easily expected to be in the 60s and even a shot for some areas to break 70 degrees. The milder weather should persist well into, if not throughout, the following week.
