Late Week Weather

Aras of lake effect snow continue to combine with blustery winds across the Finger Lakes this morning.

As expected, snow is more widespread this morning than it was for much of yesterday. With northwest winds, the northeastern Finger Lakes will be particularly susceptible to occasional squally weather.

Additional snow fall today will generally be on the order of a coating to three inches, but some locally higher amounts cannot be totally ruled out.

The snow will diminish to flurries over the course of the afternoon, and by this evening, most areas should not be seeing any additional snow.

Winds will gust as high as 40 mph once again today, causing areas of blowing and drifting and sub-zero wind chills.

Afternoon highs will be slightly warmer than yesterday, but still chilly, averaging out in the low 20s.

Clouds and the occasional spit of snow will linger overnight, though a few breaks in the clouds may start to develop, especially after midnight. Overnight lows will range through the 10s with some pockets of single digits.

Winds will become light overnight and will turn to the south Friday morning. Friday’s wind speeds will be near or under 5 mph with minimal gusting.

Friday will remain cloudy as a small low pressure system approaches from the west. Temperatures will range through the 20s, but most areas should at least be near if not above 25 degrees.

Snow from this weather system will arrive during the late evening and early overnight hours. The snow will fall steadily through the overnight. The snow may become a bit more on and off Saturday morning and should taper to stray snow showers Saturday afternoon.

A widespread 1-3 inches of new accumulation can be expected Friday night into Saturday morning.

Weekend Weather and Beyond

South winds will persist into Saturday morning but will turn to the northwest Saturday afternoon. Wind speeds may increase to around 10 mph late Saturday, but all in all will be much lighter than they have been most of this week.

As northwest winds become established, there will be a limited lake effect response from Lake Ontario Saturday night and Sunday morning. Scattered snow showers with minimal accumulation should be expected, but significant snow is unlikely.

Lake effect will end as winds turn to the south Sunday afternoon ahead of another small system. This one will mainly pass to our north Sunday night and early Monday.

Late Monday, however, a cold front will push through the region with some snow showers.

Temperatures will get a boost over the weekend with highs near 30 on Saturday and into the low, if not mid 30s Sunday and especially Monday.

However, the cold front will make quick work of that, with highs in the low half of the 20s, if not the 10s, the remainder of next week.

Lake effect snow on Tuesday mainly looks east of the Great Lakes, so some snow showers off Lake Erie may make it into the Finger Lakes. Wednesday looks snowier as winds turn more to the northwest and bring Ontario’s snow south.

Another weather system may bring temperatures back to near 30 next weekend, but more cold air awaits behind that system, too.
