Cooler Air

Cool air has returned to the Finger Lakes behind yesterday’s cold front and ahead of high pressure building in from central Canada.

Skies remain cloudy this morning, but there will be a gradual clearing of the skies throughout the day today. As a whole, the morning will be cloudy while the afternoon will turn sunnier.

Even once the thick, low clouds from this morning dissipate, the sunshine this afternoon will mix with some occasional thin clouds.

Northwest winds will be blustery this morning but, like the clouds, will gradually decrease for the afternoon. Top gusts this morning will be 30-35 mph, while afternoon gusts will be 20-25 mph while evening winds will become briefly calm.

Temperatures will remain cool today. The warmest readings will be in the valleys of the Southern Tier, where some mid 40s will be possible. Other areas in the Southern Tier and a few urban areas may see low 40s, but most of the region will stick to the upper 30s. A few hilltops will only see mid 30s.

Clouds will gradually build back in overnight, with a slow shift in the wind to the southeast.

Overnight lows will mainly be in the mid 20s.

Southeast winds will steadily increase on Wednesday as our next weather maker approaches from the west. Afternoon gusts will be 35-40 mph, mainly over the southern half of the region.

Skies will remain cloudy and a stray morning shower or flurry cannot be ruled out.

A better chance for precipitation will come in the late afternoon when showers and perhaps a few rumbles of thunder quickly move through the area. This will be most likely between 4-7 PM.

Through sunset, temperatures will peak in the mid 40s. However, behind the late day showers, winds will turn to the south, increasing further. Temperatures will rise through the overnight, with most areas in the mid 50s by Thursday morning.

Unsettled Weather

Thursday will see another brief spike in temperatures. Many areas will approach, if not exceed 70 degrees for a short time during the early afternoon.

The warm weather will be accompanied by periods of rain through the morning and early afternoon and a few more showers in the later afternoon.

Cooler air will build back in once winds turn to the northwest during the evening and overnight hours. This incoming air mass will not be quite as chilly as today’s, with morning lows Friday in the low 40s.

Like today, Friday will start with clouds before some breaks of sun appear. Unlike today, clouds will remain plentiful, limiting the overall amount of sunshine there is on Friday.

Highs Friday will be in the mid 40s. Nighttime temperatures will initially drop to the upper 30s, then rise a few degrees before sunrise Saturday.

The weekend is looking wet, with widespread rain likely on Saturday and numerous showers on Sunday. Both days should have highs in the low 50s. However, there is a scenario where Sunday could be briefly warmer, depending on the evolution of the low pressure system passing through.

Southwest winds may get blustery for a time Saturday afternoon and Saturday night with some higher elevations potentially gusting over 40 mph.

Temperatures will drop again behind this system, with highs in the 40s Monday and upper 30s and low 40s next Tuesday. Beyond that, the temperature forecast becomes too uncertain to speculate much at this time.
