Brief Temperature Set Back
Northwest winds will keep the Finger Lakes chilly today.
With low pressure off the coast of New England and a large high over central Canada, the gates to cold air have been opened.
Temperatures are starting in the low 30s across the Finger Lakes. A few scattered flurries are out and about as well. Thankfully, these are minor and will not result in any accumulations.
Skies will remain mostly cloudy into the early afternoon. Then, some sun will start to peak out as the overcast breaks up. Even then, some thin clouds high in the atmosphere may filter some of that sunshine.
With only the brief period of sun and the ample supply of chilly air, do not expect temperatures to get more than a couple degrees beyond 40 this afternoon.
The wind will not be as strong as the last couple days, but will still gust over 20 mph, making it feel a touch colder than it actually is.
Overnight temperatures will drop back into the mid 20s with partly cloudy to clear skies and nearly calm winds.
Thursday will have a mix of sun and clouds with a few scattered afternoon rain showers as a warm front approaches from the southwest. These showers will be most likely in the western Finger Lakes, but most areas will not see any rain at all.
Temperatures will range from the low 40s near Lake Ontario, into the mid 40s for most of the Finger Lakes, with a few upper 40s in southeastern areas such as Elmira and Ithaca.
Warming Back Up
The warm front will push through Thursday night, leading to a strengthening south-southeast wind Friday morning. Temperatures will rise some overnight with mid and upper 40s by the morning.
Winds Friday will be similar to the last few days with gusts over 40 mph commonplace. Some higher elevations could see gusts near or above 50 mph.
Temperatures will return to the low and mid 60s with sunshine filtered through some thin clouds. A late day front will bring showers and possibly thunderstorms into the region.
There will be no cool down behind this front as blustery southwest winds continue into Saturday. Skies will be sunny with highs approaching 70 degrees.
The relative humidity on Saturday will drop below 40%. Combined with the sunshine, strong winds, and warm temperatures, conditions will be ripe for brush fires.
A new system will target the area later Sunday into Monday. Once again, winds will become strong and showers and thunderstorms will be possible.
