Snow and Sun
The next few days will be marked by trading periods of light snow and sunshine while gusty winds keep temperatures chilly.
A small disturbance is moving south through the Finger Lakes this morning. Light snow associated with this feature is being enhanced by Lake Ontario. Accumulations around an inch are possible as the snow tapers off later this morning.
Sunshine will then increase for the afternoon, though a few lake effect clouds and perhaps a stray flurry may linger to the southeast of Lake Ontario.
Northwest winds will be breezy with gusts around 30 mph. This will bring in cooler air, holding temperatures in the mid and upper 20s.
Little change is expected tonight, with most areas seeing clear skies but a few lake effect clouds persisting. Areas that see some clouds overnight will stick to the mid teens. Mostly clear areas will drop to the upper single digits and low teens.
Friday will be the flip of today, starting with sun and then seeing clouds increase later in the day. Temperatures will be a couple degrees warmer, topping it around 30 degrees. Winds will be stronger though, with gusts of 35-40 mph through the day, still from the northwest.
Another disturbance moves in Friday evening with snow showers. Lake effect behind this feature will persist well into Saturday for the favored areas southeast of Lake Ontario. Locally a couple inches could fall.
Outside of the snow showers Saturday, skies will be partly cloudy. Northwest winds will gust to around 30 mph with afternoon highs in the mid 20s.
Quiet and Warmer
Our weather will then gradually transition into a new regime of quiet and warmer weather.
Sunday will be precipitation free with a mix of sun and clouds. Temperatures will still be cool though, with northwest winds keeping highs in the mid 20s.
Winds will start to turn to the south on Monday, pushing highs into the upper 30s. Morning sunshine will give way to a deck of thin clouds for the afternoon. A stray shower or flurry cannot be ruled out Monday night.
Warm air will then move in with authority for the middle of next week. Highs on Tuesday should reach at least 50 degrees, though there is some question on the progress of the warm air through the region and it is too far out to be sure.
Wednesday and Thursday will be the warmest days. There is good confidence, even this far out, that highs should fall into the 55 to 65 degree range. Wednesday may be a touch warmer than Thursday, thanks to a better chance for sunshine.
Late Thursday a cold front will move through with some scattered rain showers. That will send temperatures back toward the seasonal averages for the weekend.

Hi Drew,
Do you have a sense of when we should think about tapping our sugar maples? The sap flows when it’s above freezing during the day but below freezing at night.
Thanks!
Meteorologist Drew Montreuil
We won’t see temperatures get above freezing until the warm-up next week. Then the question will become will nighttime temperatures get below freezing. After the warm-up breaks late next week, we may settle into a more ideal pattern.
