Turning Hot
High pressure has redeveloped itself over far eastern Canada, allowing a more stable southerly flow to develop across the Finger Lakes.
This will lead to a further increase in temperatures despite clouds also mixing in to a greater degree than in days past.
The extra clouds come as the jet stream sets up overhead. This jet stream is very weak but is serving as a channel of some extra moisture and bits of energy, resulting in clouds.
Many of the clouds are high in the atmosphere and the sun will partially shine through them. Mixing in will be fair weather clouds lower in the atmosphere for the midday and afternoon hours. A stray shower cannot be ruled out, mostly in the I-81 corridor, but the chances for rain are nearly zero.
The south and southwest winds will remain light today with speeds at or below 5 mph. They will do their job, though, and temperatures today will be even warmer than yesterday.
Widespread mid 80s are likely throughout the Finger Lakes. Only the higher elevations of the western Southern Tier and Central New York should stick to the low 80s. Dewpoints will be in the 50s, which is an increase over the rest of the week, but probably will not be noticeable to most.
Periods of clouds will persist overnight. Temperatures will drop to the mid and upper 50s across the Southern Tier, with low 60s to the north.
Friday will be more of the same, with clouds mixing with some sunshine. High temperatures will add just one or two more degrees, but that will be enough to result in upper 80s along I-90 with mid 80s most other areas. Dewpoints should again stick to the 50s, so the humidity will not be too noticeable for most.
Like today, Friday may have a stray shower, but most, if not all, the region will remain dry. The south wind will be a touch stronger, coming in at 5-10 mph.
Weekend Weather and Beyond
The chances for rain will nose up slightly on Saturday and Sunday as the jet stream becomes more active. Neither day looks like a washout though, and a few areas may get through the weekend without seeing any rain.
Saturday’s showers will be possible at any time, but especially during the afternoon hours. A rumble of thunder may also be possible.
Winds will turn to the northwest, cutting off the very warm air. Highs will remain well above the seasonal averages though, topping out in the upper 70s to near 80. Dewpoints will increase to near 60 degrees, which may start to be noticed by those more sensitive to humidity.
Sunday has a better chance for showers and a few thunderstorms as a cold front moves through from the north. Temperatures should break into the low or even mid 80s before the front slides through.
Temperatures will retreat for Monday behind the front, with highs ranging from the mid 60s to the low 70s. Conditions should stay dry, with clouds gradually giving way to sunshine.
Tuesday also looks dry as heat and humidity reload. Some areas may be able to break into the 80s with dewpoints returning to near 60.
Another front will come through on Wednesday. Showers and thunderstorms will be possible. Thursday will return to the 60s for highs before a steady increase in temperature again next weekend.
