Pattern on Repeat
The weather today will be similar to the weather we had yesterday, with building heat and humidity leading to afternoon thunderstorms.
Skies are sunny throughout the region this morning and will help temperatures rise in a hurry once again. By the early afternoon, temperatures will be peaking near or just above 90 degrees for much of the region.
With muggy dewpoints well into the 60s, the heat index value will rise into the mid and possibly upper 90s, prompting the National Weather Service to issue another round of Heat Advisories for most counties in the Finger Lakes region.
All of the heat and humidity will lead to pop up afternoon showers and storms. The storms will form into small clusters of broken lines, similar to yesterday. Also like yesterday, there is a small chance for some gusty winds to briefly occur in the strongest cells. Very heavy rain will also be possible.
The storms will mostly dissipate as the sun sets, but a few showers or storms may linger into the evening and even overnight.
Thunderstorms will have an even better chance of developing tomorrow as a cold front approaches the region. Numerous storms are expected, and with a greater chance for severe weather. Damaging winds will be the primary threat, along with heavy rain once again.
High temperatures will not get as much of a chance to peak tomorrow, with thunderstorms developing by the midday and early afternoon hours when temperatures are in the mid and upper 80s.
Cool and Showery
Cooler air will build in behind the front and persist through the weekend. There is some uncertainty in how the precipitation will unfold in the coming days, though. That could in turn impact the temperatures.
The question will be how far south the front sags, and the development and path of low pressure systems along the front.
Generally speaking, the further south and east, the better the chances for rain later this week. That is not to say that areas north and west are out of the woods, though.
Each day from Thursday through the weekend will at least have a chance for rain. One or two of the days could end up more of a washout with heavy rain, but unfortunately, those details are too uncertain to pinpoint. What can be said is that Thursday and Friday have a higher chance for this than the weekend days do.
Temperatures will retreat to the 70s during this time. Should a particular day see widespread rain throughout the day, highs could stick to the upper 60s.
