Thursday-Friday Weather
An area of low pressure is passing just southeast of the area this morning.
Widespread rain, some heavy, moved through during the overnight hours and is well northeast of the Finger Lakes already. A second, smaller batch of lighter rain immediately behind the low is moving through early this morning.
Once this second area of rain departs by mid-morning, it will be the end of widespread precipitation today. However, on and off showers will persist throughout the daytime hours and even into the early evening.
Most of the time, the showers should be isolated and small, meaning much of the day will not have rain actively falling.
Nonetheless, it will still be a cloudy, cool day.
Northwest winds will kick up this morning, reaching speeds just over 10 mph. Gusts will top out around 30 mph.
With plenty of clouds and the northwest winds, temperatures will only rise to the mid 60s today. Some higher elevations may only get a couple degrees above 60.
After the final showers move out this evening, skies will begin to clear overnight and winds will become more southwesterly. Overnight lows will mostly be between 50-55 degrees, but a few cooler pockets are also possible, especially in the western Southern Tier.
Friday will be a quiet day with a mixture of sunshine and cloud cover. No precipitation is expected, though.
Winds will turn back to the northwest and will nearly match today for speed and gustiness. The sunshine will help temperatures overcome this somewhat, with highs mostly in the low 70s. Higher elevations may just fail to reach 70 degrees.
Weekend Weather, Next Week Preview
A weak area of high pressure will be overhead on Saturday, which should keep most areas dry with nearly calm winds.
However, there will be some energy in the atmosphere that may touch off a few afternoon showers. Any rain that falls is expected to be light and brief.
An area of low pressure to the south may spread some extra cloudiness in, especially for the first half of the day. Skies should become sunnier in the afternoon, though fair weather clouds and those few stray showers will also be present.
Assuming at least partial afternoon sunshine, high temperatures should make it into the low 70s. Extra clouds and or showers would hold temperatures back a bit more, just as extra sunshine and no rain could lead to mid 70s.
Sunday should be able to reach the mid 70s thanks to some light south winds. Skies will be a mix of sun and clouds, but this time, it is the clouds that will ultimately win out.
Some late afternoon showers and rumbles of thunder will be possible, with the rain chances increasing Sunday night into early Monday. The rain should end early, leaving a mix of sun and clouds for most of the day Monday.
Temperatures will continue to nose their way upward slowly. Highs Monday should mostly be near or just above 75 degrees, while Tuesday should reach the upper 70s thanks to dry conditions and partial sunshine.
Wednesday looks to have a decent chance of pushing into the 80s. An afternoon cold front could trigger some thunderstorms.
The weather late next week is uncertain. There should be some rain at some point, but it may be dependent on leftovers from thunderstorms to the west. It is far too early to tell how that may unfold.
Temperatures will also be impacted by such a pattern but should remain in the not-too-hot, not-too-cool range.
