Rising Temperatures
A comfortable day is ahead for the Finger Lakes, as a light northwesterly flow sets up between low pressure over New England and high pressure building into the Upper Great Lakes.
Areas of morning cloudiness are scattered about the region this morning. Many of these low clouds will burn off during the middle of the morning, but there are some clouds higher in the atmosphere that may linger.
Fair weather clouds will also develop, keeping skies mixed into the afternoon. A few brief spits of rain will be possible, especially through the late morning and midday hours. Most areas will not see rain, and those that do may barely wet the pavement.
The aforementioned northwest winds will blow at speeds just over 5 mph today with gusts around 20 mph. Most areas will be in the mid 70s this afternoon, though a few of the typically warmer areas may sneak into the upper 70s. Humidity will remain low with dewpoints in the 50s or even 40s.
Skies will clear tonight and winds will diminish. Overnight temperatures will range from the upper 40s and low 50s in cooler pockets across the Southern Tier to the upper 50s along the lakeshores. Most areas should end up in the mid 50s.
High pressure will pass overhead with light and variable winds on Friday. There should be plenty of sunshine to go along with some small fair weather clouds.
Temperatures will rise with highs mostly between 80-85 degrees. Some higher elevations may not quite reach 80 degrees. The air will be very dry with dewpoints well into the 40s and relative humidity values dipping under 30 percent.
Hot While Hoping for Rain
This weekend, temperatures will continue to trend upward. Both days should have above average temperatures, but the heat will be nothing out of the ordinary for mid-July.
Saturday will have lots of sunshine and just a few passing clouds. Like Friday, winds will be nearly calm and from variable directions. Most areas, even higher elevations, should get above 85 degrees. A few areas will hit 90 degrees, especially along and near the Thruway, and from Elmira to Binghamton.
The air will continue to be dry with low dewpoints, but humidity will creep upwards Saturday night as a light south wind develops. Some clouds may also build in Saturday night. These factors will help temperatures remain in the 60s overnight.
The amount of sun we see on Sunday is uncertain, but at least some filtered sunshine seems likely. A few showers or storms may pop up late in the day, but most of the time should be dry.
Despite these factors, temperatures should at least match and will likely exceed Saturday. Many areas will be around 90 degrees. Dewpoints will be into the upper 50s and low 60s.
Low pressure will track northeast toward the region on Monday. The models have trended towards a rainy day across the Finger Lakes, which would certainly be beneficial. It is not a guarantee to unfold that way, though.
Assuming it rains steadily for part or all of Monday, temperatures will be held back to the 70s. Less rain means warmer air, and the heat will quickly return behind the low. Highs Tuesday should be into the mid 80s with 90 degrees a real possibility multiple times during the latter part of next week and into next weekend.
There will be other chances for rain and thunder as well. Wednesday evening will be the next best chance after Monday.
