Early Week Weather
The Finger Lakes will continue to get a break from the weather this week after recent storms and hot and humid weather.
While high pressure is in control of the region, there is a subtle cold front to the north which will drop south through the area this afternoon.
Sunshine will mix with some thin clouds ahead of the front early this morning and will then be joined by growing fair weather clouds before noon. During the mid and late afternoon hours, a few scattered showers and perhaps a rumble of thunder will pop up.
Not all areas will see rain today, and those that do should see mainly brief periods of rain and light amounts.
Most of the showers will dissipate by sunset, but a stray shower overnight cannot be ruled out.
Temperatures today will mostly be in the low and mid 70s. Some upper 70s are possible from Elmira to Binghamton. Winds will be from the northwest at up to 10 mph. A few gusts may reach 25 mph.
Overnight temperatures will fall into the low and mid 50s. A few of the typically colder areas in the western Southern Tier and Central New York may slip into the 40s.
A northerly flow will remain in place for Tuesday with wind speeds around 5 mph.
Sunshine will mix with fair weather clouds, but no additional rain is expected. High temperatures will be a degree or two cooler than today with widespread highs between 70-75 degrees.
Tuesday night will be mostly clear, with lows in the upper 40s and low 50s.
Late Week Weather
Wednesday and Thursday will see slightly warmer air work into the region. Facilitating the change will be some shifting winds.
On Wednesday, the wind will be light and variable, if not completely calm at times. Just removing the north wind will bump temperatures up a few degrees, with most areas getting near or above 75 degrees.
By Thursday, the wind will be from the south and southwest with speeds around and slightly above 5 mph. This will push many areas near or above 80 degrees. Dewpoints both days will remain comfortably low in the 40s or 50s.
Both Wednesday and Thursday will be dry with a pleasant summertime mix of sun and clouds.
The best chance for rain this week will come on Friday as another cold front moves through. Scattered showers and thunderstorms are expected, but there is still a high degree of uncertainty about how widespread and heavy they will become. For every model that shows heavy rain, there is another that shows little to nothing.
Temperatures will get knocked back to the mid 70s for Saturday, but dry weather is once again expected.
Sunday and Monday will see warming temperatures ahead of another front early next week. Temperatures are then expected to be near or slightly above average as we head towards the middle of August. Precipitation looks near or below average.
