Increasing Sunshine, Decreasing Temperatures

A cold front is moving through the region early this morning with high pressure building in behind from the northwest.

Clouds remain in place this morning and there are even a few small showers on the radar over the far southeastern reaches of the Finger Lakes region. The majority of the rain is over eastern New York, heading into New England.

Dry air building in behind the front is showing in the dewpoints, which are falling through the 50s across western New York this morning.

As the dry air works eastward, our dewpoints will also fall, and the clouds will start to break up. Some peaks of the sun will be possible before noon, with a greater increase in sunshine during the afternoon.

Northwest winds will blow behind the front but will not be too strong with speeds just over 5 mph.

A few areas, namely urban centers and the broad valleys of the Southern Tier, will make it to near or just above 70 degrees today. Most areas will be in the upper 60s with higher elevations in the mid 60s.

Tonight, skies will become mostly clear outside of a few lake effect clouds near Lake Ontario. A few spits of rain may come out of these clouds.

Where it becomes clear, overnight lows will reach 45-50 degrees. Where lake effect clouds develop, low or even mid 50s are more likely.

Any lake effect should dissipate Thursday morning. Skies will be generally sunny with fair weather clouds developing. Partly cloudy skies will persist through the afternoon before skies clear again leading up to sunset.

Winds will again be from the northwest with speeds of 5-10 mph. Afternoon highs will be a couple degrees cooler than today, with most areas in the mid 60s, but with a few higher elevations not getting too far above 60 degrees.

Thursday night will again be clear and cool. Even near-lake locations will drop into the 40s, and some parts of the Southern Tier and Central New York could see low 40s or even an isolated pocket of upper 30s.

Friday will be mostly sunny with highs mostly in the upper 60s. Winds will be around 5 mph from the north.

Weather This Weekend, Next Week

Saturday would be another sunny day, but Hurricane Lee will be moving northward just off the New England Coast. While there will be no rain from Lee in our region, there may be a slight increase in wind and some clouds.

Winds will remain out of the north between Lee and the high pressure system. Wind speeds may increase to near or slightly above 10 mph with gusts to 25 mph.

Skies may turn overcast with thin clouds if Lee tracks far enough west. At least some sunshine may still be able to filter through these clouds, especially over the western half of the region.

With the clouds and north winds, temperatures will not get any warmer, with highs sticking to the upper 60s.

Lee will quickly move off to the northeast, leaving a return to some sunshine on Sunday. However, a small system will also move in, leading to some afternoon clouds and perhaps a few late showers.

Winds on Sunday will swing around to the west and southwest at speeds around 5 mph. This should give temperatures a slight nudge into the low 70s.

Some scattered showers will persist into Monday, but it does not look like a washout of a day. Highs will return to the upper 60s.

The rest of next week also looks mostly dry with the next substantial hints of rain not coming until the following weekend. Temperatures should stick near or just under 70 degrees until they warm slightly late in the week.
