Early Week Weather
A pair of low pressure systems will hang around the northeastern United States for most of the week, resulting in a cool flow of air and lake effect snow showers.
The first low will remain nearly stationary today, centered just east of Maine. Westerly winds flowing in towards the low will blow throughout the day today, ending up slightly north of west late in the afternoon.
With the west winds, only a few stray snow showers are expected during the daytime hours today. Daytime accumulations are not expected, with temperatures mainly rising into the upper 30s with a few low 40s.
The wind will be a bit blustery, with a few gusts reaching 30 mph.
Snow showers will increase tonight as temperatures drop and winds become better aligned for some lake effect. The snow will remain scattered with small snow bands coming and going through the night.
Accumulations should be minor, with most areas seeing just a coating. A few isolated pockets may see an inch or two.
Overnight lows will be near 30 degrees, with winds turning back to the west or even southwest by the morning. By Tuesday afternoon, winds will be from the southwest, again with a few gusts as high as 30 mph.
The southwest winds will be in response to the approach of the second low, which will drop across Canada and through the northern Great Lakes. Afternoon highs will again be in the upper 30s and low 40s.
Snow will be very limited during most of the day Tuesday, but late in the afternoon, snow showers and a few squalls will develop. The snow should become more widespread in the evening, with many areas seeing a coating to an inch of accumulation.
Steady snow will transition to on and off snow showers after midnight.
Late Week Weather
These snow showers will continue into and throughout Wednesday, possibly mixing with some rain during the afternoon as highs top out a degree or two warmer than Monday and Tuesday.
An evening cold front will again bring a period of more widespread snow Wednesday evening. Like Tuesday, accumulations will mainly be limited to an inch or so, though some higher elevations could see slightly more.
Northwest winds behind the cold front will reinforce the cooler air. Thursday will start out in the low 20s and afternoon highs will only make it to the upper 20s and low 30s.
The winds will also be at their strongest on Thursday with gusts of 30-40 mph commonplace.
Lake effect snow will impact the area during the morning hours but should diminish by the afternoon. Locally, another couple of inches could fall, most likely in the lake effect prone areas southeast of Lake Ontario.
The wintry weather for the week may not be done there, either. While most of Friday is looking dry, late in the day, a small area of low pressure will pass by. This could bring one more shot of widespread snow during the evening and overnight hours with a couple inches of accumulation.
This is the least certain of the snowfalls this week, so continue to monitor the forecast for updates if you have plans later Friday.
Winter will loosen its grip slightly this weekend, with both Saturday and Sunday expected to see highs in the low 40s with a mix of sun and clouds.
High pressure is expected to take over early next week with continued quiet weather and warming temperatures. Much of next week should have highs in the 40s or 50s. The weather will become more unsettled late in the week.
