Unsettled Through Saturday

Low pressure remains parked just off the New England coast this morning and will move very little today.

Moisture wrapping around the low continues to push light, showery precipitation into our region. With temperatures in the upper 20s and low 30s, mostly flurries are flying this morning. Some areas saw some minor snow accumulation overnight.

There will not be much change in the overall weather today with on and off bouts of light precipitation throughout the daytime and nighttime hours. As temperatures warm, rain will become more common, but some higher elevations may stay cool enough for snow to fall throughout the day. No additional snow accumulation is expected, though.

A stiff northwest breeze will develop this morning, building to speeds of 10-15 mph with gusts around 30 mph this afternoon.

Temperatures will be held down, with highs in the upper 30s and low 40s.

Evening temperatures will slide back through the upper and mid 30s. Just as some areas will stay snow during the daytime hours today, some areas will stay rain through the overnight tonight.

The overall coverage of showers should decrease by Saturday morning, but occasional spits of rain and snow will continue to be possible throughout Saturday. There should be significantly more dry time, though, a few breaks of sun as it sets will be possible.

Northwest winds will be breezy once again, with speeds up around 15 mph and gusts of 30-35 mph. The strongest winds are expected across the Southern Tier and into Central New York.

Temperatures will get a small boost on Saturday, reaching a high in the low and mid 40s.

Turning Dry and Warm — Eclipse Weather Forecast

Temperatures will drop to the low 30s by Sunday morning with skies clearing overnight. A few morning fair weather clouds will develop before high pressure causes them to dissipate by Sunday afternoon. The rest of the day should be mostly sunny.

With high pressure coming in from the west and low pressure still lingering east of New England, but further out to sea, our winds on Sunday will take on a northerly direction. The wind will not be as strong as today or tomorrow, with speeds up to 10 mph and gusts of 20-25 mph.

Despite the northerly winds, temperatures will rise thanks to the sunshine. Highs will be in the upper 40s with a few locations hitting 50 degrees.

There has been no real change on the weather models for Monday’s weather. Areas of high, mainly thin clouds are still expected to be coming and going throughout the day. A few thicker clouds are not out of the question, but there should also be plenty of sunny periods as well.

How the clouds and clearing are distributed during the key minutes of the eclipse is not possible to tell at this point and may not become clear until the eclipse is approaching on Monday. Such is the nature of trying to predict individual clouds at very specific times and locations.

Overall, though, Monday will be a pleasant day. Winds will be light from the south with speeds around 5 mph and afternoon temperatures will be in the upper 50s. If the clouds cooperate, it should be a great day for being outside experiencing the eclipse.

Temperatures will not stop there, however, and will jump about another 10 degrees for Tuesday. Look for highs in the upper 60s with a few places likely hitting 70 degrees. Skies will again be sunny with a few clouds.

Unsettled weather will build back in for the second half of next week with rain possible Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday. It will not be raining the entire time, and it is still a bit uncertain which day will have the highest chances of being a washout.

It will remain mild, though, with highs not returning to the 50s until this system passes and the weekend arrives. More warm air will move right back in the following week.

This may be out of your scope of offering, but it would be helpful to me and possibly many other of your eclipse-focused readers:
It seems as if a cloud system is building on Monday across the state, at different times at points further N, E of the flx. I wonder if you could comment on whether the nature of this cloud system will be relatively consistent across the state in regards to being high and thin, like in the flx? Or if locations further N, E might be building in more thickly, for instance

I wish every region in the state/US had a weather person as dependable and detail-oriented as you. We don’t take you for granted, Thanks Drew!

As we get closer and the evolution of the cloud cover (hopefully) becomes more clear, I’ll certainly be sharing whether there will be other parts of the region that seem more or less favorable!
