Early Week Weather

An area of high pressure over the Great Lakes this morning will keep the weather tranquil early on this week.

There are plenty of clouds around this morning with a frontal boundary to our south. There may even be a lingering spit of rain early this morning, but these are few and far between.

How the cloud cover evolves today is a bit uncertain. Clouds will certainly hang tough through the first part of the morning, but beyond that, some sun may try to work its way out. Models have this occurring to varying degrees, ranging from some glimpses of filtered sun through widespread cloud cover, while others show clearing skies this afternoon.

No matter the amount, or lack of sunshine, it will remain dry the rest of the day. Light northwest winds will blow at around 5 mph and afternoon highs will be in the upper 60s and low 70s.

Skies will clear tonight, if they are not already, and remain as such through the overnight. Winds will become calm, allowing temperatures to drop to the mid 40s with a few pockets of low 40s, mainly in and around Cortland County.

Tuesday will be sunny with some occasional thin clouds passing through, especially in the afternoon. No rain will fall.

Winds will remain nearly calm throughout the day and temperatures will nudge upwards. Most areas will be in the low 70s, but warmer pockets are likely.

Unsettled Weather

Clouds will increase Tuesday evening and some showers and thunderstorms will move through during the overnight and predawn hours of Wednesday morning, kicking off a period of unsettled weather. Some of these storms may have some locally heavy downpours, while other areas may not see any rain at all.

The chances of showers and storms will continue Wednesday, but chances will be low at any given time for any given location. The activity should be isolated and there will probably be long stretches of time where there is little to no rain falling anywhere in the region.

Temperatures will reach their high mark for the week with widespread mid 70s and pockets approaching 80 degrees. Winds will be from the southwest early, but will turn to the northwest for most of the day with speeds around 10 mph.

Scattered showers and a few thunderstorms are likely on Thursday as low pressure passes nearby or overhead. The exact track of the low will determine the nature of the showers and potential for thunderstorms.

Thursday will be cooler with highs in mid 60s. Friday will be cooler still with highs only in the mid 50s.

Friday looks like a soggy day with widespread showers throughout the day.

The weekend has some hope of drying out with a better chance for a few showers on Sunday than Saturday. Temperatures will slowly start to rebound, with highs around 60 on Saturday and into the mid 60s Sunday.

Precipitation is uncertain next week but looks to be less than this week. Temperatures will also start to rise again with at least a couple days likely reaching the 70s.

Weather Photos Needed!

Sometimes, the hardest part of writing my daily blog post is finding just the right picture to accompany the post. I always strive to match the picture as much as possible to how I anticipate the day looking. There are a few times of the year when this is especially difficult, and the brief period where the leaves are first coming out on the trees is one of them. Because the window of this time is so short, my library of photos is thin. Today, I couldn’t quite find the picture I wanted, so I had to make do the best I could.

You can help out, though! If you have taken some photos this weekend, or end up taking some early this week, please consider sending them my way to bulk up my library for this time of the year. Sunny, cloudy, mixed, stormy… all are needed.

And, of course, I accept any photos of any weather year-round for use in the blog, and maybe even the annual calendar! Just fill out the easy uploader form to submit your photos. » Submit your photos here! «
