Departing Low Pressure
An area of low pressure will move from northern New York this morning, through New England today.
Associated with this low is a cold front that moved through the region early yesterday evening. A northwest flow of cooler and much less humid air has been filtering in through the overnight and will continue to make inroads today.
With the low nearby, there are plenty of clouds and scattered showers across the region early this morning.
This will continue through the morning hours. The showers should be on and off, though some periods of slightly steadier rain are possible. The further northeast you are in the region, the higher your chances for rain, the more showers you will see, and the longer they will last.
Skies will start to clear this afternoon and by the end of the day, skies may be mostly sunny. This will lead into a night of clear skies and comfortably cool temperatures.
The northwest wind will be blustery today with speeds of 15-20 mph and gusts as high as 45 mph at times.
Temperatures will be warmest in the far western areas, where sunshine takes over first. Rochester and Dansville may even make a run at 80 degrees. Most of the area will be in the mid 70s though, with some low 70s or maybe even upper 60s towards Cortland County.
Dewpoints will be mercifully lower, staying comfortably in the 50s all day and into the night.
With clear skies, dry air, and dropping wind speeds, temperatures will fall steadily this evening into the 60s. Most areas will get into the 50s overnight, with lakeshores staying around 60 degrees.
Tuesday will start out sunny, but clouds will gradually increase. The biggest question is whether a few showers work into the area late in the afternoon, particularly the western reaches of the region. For now, at least consider it a possibility.
Winds will turn to the southwest and be steady with speeds up to 10 mph. This will jump temperatures right back into the mid 80s, but humidity levels will remain low with dewpoints solidly in the 50s.
A Repeatable Pattern
Overall, our weather is settling into a steady, repeatable pattern as a progressive atmosphere sets up across the continent.
Day 1 has showers and storms as a system passes through, Day 2 transitions from clouds to sun with a few morning showers, and Day 3 transitions from sun to clouds. Sunday was Day 1, today is Day 2, and tomorrow is Day 3.
On Wednesday, we cycle back to Day 1 as a weather system moves through. Showers and thunderstorms will be possible, but as of now, the greatest chance for severe weather will be just to our south over Pennsylvania.
Temperatures will be in the low and mid 80s with a notable uptick in humidity. But it will be short-lived, with Thursday falling on Day 2 of the cycle.
Much like today, Thursday will have a few morning showers, increasing afternoon sun, cooler temperatures, and lower humidity. Winds are not expected to be nearly as blustery on Thursday, though. Highs will be in the low and mid 70s.
Thursday night, with clear skies, will be cool. Most areas will be in the lower half of the 50s with some upper 40s popping up in the typically cooler areas of the Southern Tier and Cortland County.
Friday we head into Day 3 of the cycle with sunshine and warming temperatures.
The cycle then repeats itself again, with showers and storms Saturday, a few lingering showers Sunday, and sunny skies Monday. We may get a bonus dry day in that cycle on Tuesday, but by Wednesday, the next system should be rolling in.
