Warming Trend
It is another chilly start to the day on Friday, but warm weather awaits the Finger Lakes region this weekend and early next week.
High pressure overhead this morning will slowly slide to the east, opening our area up to a southerly flow of warmer air behind the high.
Skies will be mixed today as areas of thin clouds pass through the region. Some of these will be thin enough to allow some sun to filter through, while at other times, it will just seem cloudy.
No precipitation is expected during the daytime hours today, though.
Temperatures this afternoon will mostly remain in the mid and upper 30s, though a few of the typically warmer areas may sneak into the low 40s.
Winds will be light today, but from the south. Wind speeds should increase this evening and overnight to 10-15 mph.
Temperatures will initially dip a few degrees this evening but will then rise overnight to around 40 degrees.
As this push of warmer air comes in, a few stray showers will be possible, mainly after midnight. There may be just enough cold air near and east of I-81 to produce a few pockets of freezing rain.
A few stray rain showers may linger into Saturday morning, but for the most part, Saturday will just be cloudy. Winds will stay steady from the south and highs will reach the mid and upper 40s.
Temperatures will again initially dip in the evening, then come back up overnight. Sunday should start out at least in the mid 40s with highs pushing into the mid 50s.
Periods of rain are likely on Sunday, especially across the western half of the region where there may be few breaks in the precipitation.
Winds will also kick up later in the day and continue into the night, coming in from the southeast. Wind speeds may be over 20 mph and gusts over 40 mph and locally as high as 50 mph.
Rain will also continue to fall through the night. Eventually, a cold front will move through, reducing the rain and somewhat weakening the wind. Temperatures will fall to the low 40s by Monday morning.
Weather Next Week
The air behind the cold front will not be all that cold. High temperatures on Monday will still be in the mid 40s.
Scattered showers will be possible throughout Monday, but especially during the morning hours. Skies should remain mostly cloudy otherwise.
Winds will be from the southwest and still blustery, especially in the Rochester area and Genesee Valley. Most wind gusts should stay under 40 mph, though.
Winds will drop substantially Monday night and skies may even clear for a time. Temperatures should drop well into the 30s.
The next weather system will be quick to arrive, however, with scattered showers arriving Tuesday morning and continuing through the afternoon.
Temperatures on Tuesday will once again be in the mid 40s. Nighttime temperatures should drop back to the mid 30s.
Cooler air will start to build in on Wednesday. Rain showers in the morning should turn over to snow showers during the day.
By Thursday, highs will be in the low 30s with lake effect snow showers.
There are strong indications that temperatures will continue to fall and a prolonged cold period is on the way from next weekend into the middle of January, at least.
