Lunar Eclipse Tonight
High pressure will provide sunshine and warming temperatures the next two days and a high likelihood of good viewing conditions for the total lunar eclipse tonight.
Skies are mostly clear across the Finger Lakes to start this morning. There is a ribbon of thin clouds that stretches from Wisconsin, across Michigan, and into southern Canada and northern New York.
Some of these thin clouds will work their way further south today, especially during the afternoon hours. They will not reduce the sunshine much for those that do see them.
High pressure is located to our east, so light south winds will blow for most of the region. The far western reaches of the Finger Lakes, however, will see light northwest winds.
Temperatures will be notably warmer than yesterday with most areas in the mid or upper 50s. A few areas around Dansville may hit 60 degrees, while some higher elevations and the shore of Lake Ontario will stay in the low 50s.
Any thin clouds will dissipate and move out during the early evening hours. Winds will remain light as temperatures drop through the 40s.
The lunar eclipse will begin roughly around midnight, turning the full moon red. The eclipse peaks roughly at 3 AM and comes to an end around 6 AM. Skies should be mostly clear for the duration of the eclipse, though an occasional haze of thin clouds cannot be totally ruled out, especially early on.
Temperatures during the middle of the night will generally be in the mid 30s. That is also where Friday should start out.
Sunshine will mix with a few more thin clouds on Friday. Southerly winds up to 10 mph will push more warm air into the region.
Afternoon highs will range through the 60s, with a few higher elevations around Cortland County topping out right around 60 degrees, while the Genesee Valley sees upper 60s or even 70 degrees. Most areas will be near or under 65 degrees.

More Warm Weather
A large and powerful storm system will take shape over the middle of the nation on Friday. By Saturday, this system will be passing through the Midwest and into the Upper Great Lakes.
Out ahead of the system, clouds should increase across the Finger Lakes.
These will still be somewhat thin clouds, so a little filtered sunshine will be possible. But it should be a duller day than today or Friday.
Southerly winds will increase with speeds of 15-20 mph. Peak gusts will be 30-40 mph.
There is a small chance for a stray shower late in the day, especially across the western Finger Lakes. Most areas will stay dry.
Temperatures will remain warm, starting in the mid 40s and rising into the 60s once again. As a whole, Saturday will probably be a degree or two cooler than Friday for most areas, but for some locations, the opposite may end up being true.
Winds will remain blustery Saturday night, then increase further Sunday morning. Gusts near or over 50 mph are not out of the question, especially from the late morning through the mid afternoon.
Sunday morning will be balmy, with lows only in the mid 50s. Afternoon highs will reach the mid and upper 60s.
A cold front will move through during the late afternoon. Expect a band of gusty rain showers and a few rumbles of thunder. Though lightning may be limited, these may prompt localized severe thunderstorm warnings and possibly even a broader severe thunderstorm watch.
This is a potential I’ve been monitoring for days and will continue to do so through the weekend.
Behind the front, winds will drastically and rapidly drop, even becoming mostly calm by the early evening. What wind there is will be from the southwest.
These will be cooling winds with temperatures falling to the mid 30s Sunday night.
Monday will be our reset day, with morning clouds giving way to afternoon sun. Highs will be in the mid 40s.
Another warm up is likely thereafter, with mid 50s Tuesday and 60s on Wednesday. Another front will move through on Thursday, knocking temperatures back again.
