Warm Today, Cooler Tomorrow

A warm day is ahead for the Finger Lakes after a weekend of large swings in the temperature.

Low pressure to our north over Canada is responsible for the mild weather today, but will also be responsible for a cold front this afternoon.

Temperatures are starting the week in the 50s and low 60s this morning and many areas will get above 65 degrees early this afternoon. Some areas will make a run at 70 degrees, mainly in the typically warmer valley and urban locations across the eastern half of the region.

Scattered showers are about the area this morning as a subtle pressure shift moves through the region. The main cold front is still back to the west and will move through this afternoon. Additional showers will be possible with the frontal passage, but they are not expected to be widespread or long lasting.

A couple rumbles of thunder cannot be totally ruled out, especially across Tioga County, but the majority of the thunderstorm activity will be contained to eastern Pennsylvania and southeastern New York, far outside our region.

There will be some gusty winds at times today, first from the southwest, then turning to the west and northwest late behind the cold front. A few gusts may approach 40 mph, especially before the front this morning and early afternoon.

Temperatures will start to fall immediately following the front and will do so steadily and quickly through the night. Morning lows will be around 40-45 degrees colder than today’s highs, reaching the mid and upper 20s.

There will probably be a few flurries overnight and even into the early morning hours on Tuesday. No accumulation is expected.

Morning clouds tomorrow will break around midday, leaving mostly sunny skies for the afternoon. Highs will range from the upper 30s to the low 40s. A few of the valley locations in the Southern Tier may approach 45 degrees.

Thin clouds will build in around sunset Tuesday, becoming thicker and more widespread overnight. No precipitation is expected, though, with an overnight low in the upper half of the 20s.

Another Temperature Spike

Wednesday will be cloudy ahead of the next weather maker. Most of the day will be dry, but some rain showers will start to move in late in the day. Occasional rain showers will continue to be possible through the night as well.

Temperatures during the daytime hours on Wednesday will reach the mid and upper 40s. However, warmer air will build in at night, with temperatures rising into the mid 50s.

Winds will kick up as well, coming in from the south. Wind gusts of 35-45 mph are possible with the higher elevations seeing the strongest gusts.

The temperature will continue to rise on Thursday despite rather cloudy skies and occasional rain showers. Many areas are expected to be near or above 70 degrees.

A late cold front will knock temperatures back again, though not as far as today’s cold front. Lows Friday morning are expected to stay in the 40s, and highs Friday should be in the mid 50s.

Like Tuesday, Friday will start cloudy and end with sunshine.

Unsettled weather is possible for the weekend with temperatures likely staying in the 50s, but with a brief warm up also within the realm of possibility for Sunday.

Next week looks chilly with some days in the 30s possible. While it can’t be ruled out, there are currently no strong signs for big temperature spikes.
