Chilly Weather

An overall cool week will be especially cold tomorrow after a cold front moves through the region tonight.

The area is between systems this morning, with rain and snow over eastern New York, New England, and the Mid-Atlantic region and a second low pressure system over the Upper Great Lakes.

The coastal system will only bring some clouds this morning, but the break in the weather between the two systems will keep the daytime hours quiet.

Breaks in the clouds will increase through the morning and into the first half of the afternoon. During this time, skies will range from clouds and a few breaks of sun in the east to periods of mostly sunny skies to the west.

Afternoon highs will range from the mid 40s in some higher elevations to the low 50s along the I-90 and I-390 corridors.

Clouds will increase again late in the day as the cold front approaches. Accompanying the front will be a burst of precipitation this evening. Some of this may start as a little rain, but most of it will fall as a snow squall.

The timing of the squall is a bit uncertain but should impact areas west of Seneca Lake between 7-10 PM and areas to the east between 9-11 PM.

Especially since this squall is coming at night, visibility will become hazardously low and road conditions may become slick.

Temperatures will quickly fall below freezing in the wake of the squall with overnight lows in the low and mid 20s.

Winds will also kick up with the squall, starting from the west but ending up from the northwest overnight. The strongest winds will come on Tuesday, however, with speeds over 20 mph and gusts to 45 mph.

These winds will keep temperatures cold, with afternoon highs in the upper 20s and low 30s and wind chills throughout the day in the 10s and even single digits.

Snow showers will increase again by sunrise and will continue into Tuesday afternoon. Northern areas will see enhancement from Lake Ontario and many areas will see snow throughout the day. Locally, a couple inches may accumulate, especially over higher elevations east of Cayuga Lake, and just inland from Lake Ontario.

Snow showers will taper to a few isolated, small lake effect bands Tuesday night. Wind speeds will also diminish, with gusts falling under 30 mph. Overnight lows will be in the mid 20s.

Temperatures Moderate, Weather Remains Active

Winds will become more westerly early Wednesday morning, ending the chance for any lake effect snow in our area. Incoming high pressure will do the rest, causing the lake effect to completely dissipate.

Wednesday will therefore have a mix of clouds and some sun with no additional precipitation expected.

Winds will remain relatively light with top gusts under 25 mph. Afternoon highs will creep back into the 40s for most areas, though higher elevations and the Lake Ontario shoreline will likely stay in the upper 30s.

Unsettled weather will be quick to move back in with a series of weather systems impacting the region late in the week and into the weekend.

Rain will move in on Thursday, possibly starting as a bit of snow early in the day. The precipitation Thursday does not look particularly heavy at this point but may stick around for most of the day.

Winds will be from the southeast, but not too strong. Afternoon highs will be in the mid 40s.

A few scattered showers will be possible Thursday night into Friday morning. Rain will become more widespread in the afternoon and into the nighttime hours Friday. While rain totals are most likely to end up around a half-inch, there are scenarios where over an inch could fall.

Additional showers are likely Saturday and possibly Sunday, but the nature of the rain is still unknown at this point.

Temperatures on Friday and into the weekend will mainly be in the upper 40s to around 50 degrees, depending on the extent and timing of the rain.

Not much can be said about next week’s weather at this point with a large spread of possibilities showing on the models, though the models do lean slightly toward warmer conditions early in the week.
