The severe thunderstorm threat may be increasing for the late morning and midday hours Thursday as a line of storms already developed to our west moves through. Otherwise, it will be very windy today, with blustery conditions and showers lingering even into the weekend. Another day of meaningful weather may unfold for Monday as well.

Active Weather Updates

Thursday 6/18 8:47 AM radar: Tornado warning in SW NY
Update Type: WARNING
Expires: June 18, 2026 9:30 am

Thursday

What: Showers, a few storms

A strong area of low pressure will pass to our north today. Strong winds are already in place and will increase a bit further this morning into the afternoon. Top gusts of 40-45 mph are likely, first from the southwest this morning, then from the west this afternoon.

As of 7AM, a broken line of thunderstorms has developed over Lake Erie into northeastern Ohio. Severe thunderstorms are part of this line. This line will cross the Finger Lakes later this morning, potentially strengthening further as it does so.

Any time you get thunderstorms in a highly windy environment such as this, the potential for severe storms or even a tornado will exist. If this line strengthens to its full potential, there is real concern for a severe weather event across the eastern Finger Lakes late this morning.

This is a highly dynamic and evolving situation. Updates, including any warnings, will be published through the morning and will show up as links in a box in this post, as well as on the homepage.

Once this main line passes through, the severe threat will diminish, but a few stray showers and storms will continue to be possible into the afternoon.

Winds, rain, and clouds will diminish this evening.

Friday

What: Scattered showers

With the low pressure system responsible for all the wind and rain lingering nearby, scattered showers look likely on Friday. It will not be a washout, though, with mainly small cells during the afternoon. A couple rumbles of thunder cannot be ruled out.. Temperatures will be a touch cooler with highs in the low 70s. Winds will be breezy from the northwest, but not quite as strong as on Thursday.

Saturday

What: Scattered showers

Breezy northwest winds will remain in place on Saturday, holding high temperatures to the low 70s. A few scattered showers will be possible, but many areas will probably be mostly or completely dry.

Sunday

What: Sun and clouds

Sunday will be very similar to Saturday, with the exception of an increase in clouds during the nighttime hours. Otherwise, expect mostly dry conditions, a couple stray pop-up showers, and temperatures in the low 70s.

Monday

What: Rain, thunderstorms possible

An area of low pressure is expected to track through the area on Monday. Just north of the low, an area of heavy rainfall is expected with localized amounts to two inches. Ahead of and just south of the low, there could be a small window for severe thunderstorms, similar to but not quite the same as today. Either way, there is potential for meaningful weather impacts on Monday. Stay tuned.

Tuesday

What: Scattered showers

Scattered showers will be possible in the wake of Monday’s system, but how widespread they are remains uncertain this far out. Temperatures will likely be in the 70s.

Wednesday

What: Sun and clouds?

Wednesday is probably the best chance for a dry day next week, but whether or not a few pop-up showers become possible remains to be seen. Temperatures will continue in the 70s.

Further Out

Later next week looks rainy or stormy with models hinting at a pair of weather systems passing through. Unsettled weather will persist through the end of June, though temperatures show a bit more of a potential for some warming as the month closes out. Time will tell if that is a trend or just noise on the models. The Climate Prediction Center’s 2-3 week outlook, running through July 10, shows more of the same.
