Waves of thunderstorms, heavy rain Tuesday and Wednesday

A stalled out frontal boundary remains draped over the region with waves of atmospheric energy passing along the front bringing waves of rain and thunder. This pattern will continue today and tomorrow, interacting with a warm and humid air mass. Occasional severe thunderstorms and flash flooding will be possible, especially but not exclusively across the southern half of the region. Thursday will be a day of transition as the front moves south and less humid, more tranquil weather settles in. During this time it will be humid with warm, muggy nights. The best chance for dry weather will come late in the week, when temperatures and dewpoints will drop back a bit. Scattered thunderstorms, some strong to severe, are likely this afternoon. The eastern half of the region has a higher threat from thunderstorms than areas further west. This activity should clear out late in the afternoon, and skies should become partly cloudy to mostly clear overnight for the lunar eclipse. A stray shower cannot be ruled out Friday, but otherwise it should be dry through the weekend. A cold front will pass through the area Thursday afternoon, interacting with a warm, muggy air mass to produce scattered showers and thunderstorms. While the main thunderstorm event will be east of the Finger Lakes, some locally strong storms will still be possible, especially east of Seneca Lake.
