Weather Blogging

Weather is complex, and often, a simple graphic does not tell the whole story.

That is why Finger Lakes Weather meteorologist Drew Montreuil blogs frequently.

From detailed forecast discussions and recapping recent weather events, to looking beyond our region at what the weather is doing elsewhere, to teaching about the weather in an easy to understand format, Finger Lakes Weather offers four different blogs.

A couple uncertain mid-week chances for some showers and storms

Most of the weather over the next few days will be driven by small disturbances in the atmosphere associated with thunderstorm complexes, which leads to lower than average forecast confidence. That being said, most areas look dry today at least. It will remain mild and a bit muggy until some cooler, dry air builds in on Friday and Saturday. The weekend may be capped off with some late showers and storms on Sunday.… Read More

Our area will again be near the very edge of an active belt of rain and thunderstorms tracking through the Upper Great Lakes into the Mid-Atlantic region. Therefore, a stray shower or storm cannot be ruled out, especially across the Southern Tier. A thunderstorm complex passing to the south during the evening could spread some light rain into the southern half of the region as well, but this remains quite uncertain. Overall, most areas will be dry throughout the day and probably the night, too. Winds will be light from the northwest, reducing dewpoints slightly to the mid and low 60s. Afternoon highs will be in the upper 70s to around 80 degrees.… Read More

Weekly Outlook: Active storm track heads south, allows cooler air in

|

A belt of active weather will serve as a pathway for multiple thunderstorm complexes over the coming days, pusher further south and further away from the Finger Lakes with each passing storm complex. This pattern will allow cooler air to seep into the region as rain chances decrease, though no day this week is totally guaranteed to be 100-percent shower free.… Read More

Monday’s weather is a bit uncertain in how it will unfold, particularly in the later afternoon hours. At least a few scattered showers will pass through during the morning. Depending on how the atmosphere recovers, and what sort of subtle triggering mechanisms are present, additional showers and storms may pop up during the later afternoon hours. The area with the best parameters for storm development will likely be over the southeastern Finger Lakes. Heavy rain and perhaps some gusty winds could accompany any storms that manage to pop up, but many areas may end up dry through the afternoon. Highs will reach the upper 70s with high humidity with dewpoints around 70. Monday evening may also have some scattered showers or storms early on before activity wanes during the overnight.… Read More

Thursday may start off with a few stray showers, but the much higher chance for rain will come after 3 PM, when scattered showers and thunderstorms pop up across the region. Any storms will be capable of heavy downpours and some gusty winds, but severe weather and flooding are generally not expected outside of possibly some minor, isolated instances. It will be very humid with dewpoints into the low 70s. Afternoon highs will reach the low and mid 80s, but some heat index values may break 90 degrees. Winds, outside of any thunderstorms, will be light from the southwest. A warm and muggy night is expected with lows around 70.… Read More

Sunshine Tuesday and Wednesday ahead of a return to unsettled weather

|

A break in the rainy weather is here, but will only last a couple days. Potentially slow-moving thunderstorms Thursday and especially Friday will bring a heavy rain risk as humidity increases late in the week. Showers will persist into the weekend, but there should be a reduction in how much rain falls, even though it will remain warm and muggy.… Read More

Drier, warmer weather heading into the weekend, but rainy Sunday
