High pressure ends brief winter blitz

Improving Conditions

High pressure will track from the Ohio Valley to the Mid-Atlantic today, leading to improving weather conditions across the Finger Lakes.

There are still some lake effect snow showers about early this morning. These are not as intense as the snow squalls last night, and the wind is not as strong.

Still, with cold temperatures, road conditions are slick and areas prone to drifting will still see significant road impacts. Travel through the rural areas will be more difficult than in towns, so allow for extra time accordingly.

Winds will become less favorable for lake effect through the morning, bringing an end to the snow showers. Sunshine will increase as the lake effect clouds dissipate as well, and most of the afternoon should see clear skies.

The wind will turn to the west and southwest this afternoon with speeds around 5 mph and gusts under 20 mph. The increase in sunshine and decrease in wind should help road conditions significantly.

High temperatures this afternoon will range from near 30 in the northwestern corner of the region to the low 20s in the hills of Central New York. Most areas will end up in the mid or upper 20s.

South and southwest winds will increase this evening. Temperatures will initially drop several degrees, but should gain it all back overnight, despite clear skies.

Sunny skies early Wednesday will gradually yield to clouds from the north. Still, highs should reach the low and mid 40s. A few late afternoon rain showers or flurries will be possible, followed by some scattered lake effect snow showers overnight.

Chilly Weekend, then Warm

Temperatures will take another dive behind Wednesday night’s precipitation. High temperatures on Thursday will be back in the mid and upper 20s. Clouds will gradually give way to some sun. Northwest winds will gust to around 30 mph.

Friday’s winds may be stronger, with gusts as high as 40 mph, still out of the northwest. Skies will be sunny until late in the day, making highs a couple degrees warmer than on Thursday. Most areas should end up around 30 degrees, with 20s in the higher elevations.

Another small front will move through Friday night with a few snow showers. Northwest winds will continue to gust to around 30 mph on Saturday with a few lingering flurries. Saturday’s high temperatures will be back to the mid and upper 20s.

Sunny skies should dominate Sunday’s weather, but winds will still be from the northwest. High temperatures in the mid and upper 20s will result one final time.

Winds will then turn to the south Sunday night, bringing a sudden and significant warm up to the region.

Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday next week all look sunny and warm. There is high confidence that temperatures will push well into the 50s and a few areas will likely break 60 degrees.

A weather system will approach late next week with rain and an eventual return to near-average temperatures somewhere around 40 degrees next weekend.
