Calmer Pattern Continues
The Finger Lakes will continue to get a needed break from active, hazardous weather through the weekend and into next week.
There will still be some chances for rain coming up, but the chances for severe weather and flooding will remain minimal.
High pressure is still firmly in control of the weather today. Sunshine will mix with fair weather clouds, especially from the late morning through the afternoon. Blue skies are expected with very low levels of wildfire smoke overhead today.
A few stray showers may pop-up this afternoon. Most areas will not see rain, and those that do see a shower will only see a brief period of mainly light rain. The best chance for a shower will be east of Cayuga Lake.
Temperatures will remain similar to the last couple days with highs mostly in the low and mid 70s. Dewpoints will also remain comfortably low, remaining in the 50s. Tonight will be mostly clear with lows well into the 50s.
Saturday will start off with sun before clouds gradually build in and thicken. Wind will turn to the south, boosting temperatures into the low 80s despite the increase in cloud cover.
After 6 PM, a few scattered showers will drift through from west to east. Again, more places will probably stay dry than will see rain, and the rain that falls will be light and brief.
There will be a better chance for rain and some thunderstorms after midnight Saturday night. Some of the activity may linger into early Sunday morning. Severe weather and flooding are unlikely.
Some additional showers and perhaps thunderstorms will develop Sunday afternoon. This will be most likely across the southern half of the region. Most of the activity will be to the south and east though, so Sunday afternoon should have plenty of dry time.
Temperatures on Sunday will reach the low 80s. Humidity will return with dewpoints well into the 60s or even near 70.
Weather Next Week
The weather next week will start off with a continuation of our relatively quiet period.
Both Monday and Tuesday will be mainly dry with a mix of sun and clouds. High temperatures will work into the low and perhaps mid 80s and dewpoints will be in the upper 50s and low 60s.
Monday has a small chance for a couple pop-up afternoon showers, mainly in the higher elevations of the Southern Tier. Tuesday has a better chance for remaining completely dry during the day, but nighttime showers and thunderstorms will be possible.
Triggering that activity will be a front that will move through by Wednesday. Models have been trending more towards the Tuesday night solution, which would open Wednesday up to less rain and more sun.
Still, if you have plans outdoors Wednesday, continue to monitor the forecast, as there is still a high enough chance for some scattered showers and storms.
A better chance for rain and thunder looks to come on Thursday. Again though, uncertainty is high. Some models show rain both Wednesday and Thursday, while others only show rain one of the days. Most models at least show a bit of rain sometime between Wednesday and Thursday.
Temperatures will return to the 70s for highs with the mid-week unsettled weather and remain there into next weekend and possibly through much of the first week of August.
