Mid-Week Weather

The Finger Lakes region is sandwiched between two low pressure systems this morning.

One large low is located over Minnesota, while a smaller low is moving off the Mid-Atlantic coast.

Clouds from the Mid-Atlantic low are overhead, but most of the rain just missed the area to the south. As these clouds pull out during the late morning and early afternoon, clouds well out ahead of the Minnesota low will build in.

While the time for some sun between these two systems is short, it will not be surprising to see some breaks in the clouds this afternoon.

Winds will be stronger today than yesterday, coming in from the southeast at 10-15 mph. A few occasional gusts over 30 mph will be possible, but most areas will see top gusts just under 30 mph.

High temperatures will push back into the 60s again today. The best chance for mid 60s will be in the areas roughly around I-90. Some mid 60s in places like Ithaca, Elmira, and Owego will also be possible, especially if enough sun works out. A few higher elevations in the Southern Tier and in Cortland County may end up just shy of 60 degrees.

Rain showers associated with the Minnesota low will move in this evening. The rain will continue on and off through the night. Blustery southeast winds will persist as well, and temperatures will drop to the mid 40s.

Thursday will be a wet day as a front slowly works through the region while a new area of low pressure develops to the southeast. Rain will fall off and on throughout the day for much of the Finger Lakes. Areas west of about Canandaigua have the best chance of seeing the rain taper off for the afternoon.

Winds Thursday will be light and variable with the front overhead. Temperatures will not rise much with upper 40s the most common afternoon high. Some low 50s may make their way into the Rochester area, while mid 40s will be possible in the higher elevations of the Southern Tier and Central New York.

The rain will come to an end Thursday evening. An inch or more will be possible from Elmira to Ithaca to Syracuse and points east. Some localized poor drainage areas will be possible, but more significant flooding is not expected.

Cool Weekend, Warm Next Week

The Minnesota low will gradually make its way eastward and will influence our weather for several days.

Scattered showers are likely on Friday, especially during the afternoon hours. It will not be as rainy as Thursday, and there should be plenty of breaks in the rain. Rainfall amounts will remain light.

Winds Friday will be out of the southwest at 5-10 mph, which will help push temperatures to the low 50s. Any breaks of sunshine will only help the temperature nudge upward.

The low will be closer by on Saturday, so showers will be more plentiful than on Friday. The rain should stay light with individual showers short-lived. However, there will be enough shower activity that finding prolonged dry time will be challenging.

Temperatures will take a hit on Saturday as winds turn more westerly. Afternoon highs will be in the mid 40s. A little morning and late day snow may mix in over higher elevations with temperatures in the 30s during the nighttime hours.

Snow will be more likely on Sunday as showery, cool weather persists. Snow will be most likely early and late in the day, with rain mixing in and becoming the dominant precipitation type during the middle of the day. Highs will end up struggling into the low 40s.

The cool, unsettled weather will quickly be left behind next week. Monday will be sunny with highs reaching the low 50s. Temperatures will really take off from there, with 70s possible Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday. If everything comes together, a few places could even approach 80 degrees next week.

A cold front will move through by the late week, sending temperatures back closer to 50 degrees for the Easter weekend. Near average temperatures will persist into the following week as well.
