Early Week Weather
A few excessively stubborn lake effect clouds linger across portions of the region this morning while other areas have cleared out.
These lake clouds should continue to slowly diminish this morning. A few areas may hold onto clouds until the midday hours, but by that time, most of the area will be sunny.
Occasional thin clouds will pass through during the afternoon. These clouds will increase and thicken overnight, but precipitation is not expected before sunrise Tuesday.
Temperatures today will mostly be in the mid 30s. However, the Southern Tier, particularly in the broad river valleys, will be warmer with highs approaching 40 degrees. Evening temperatures will quickly drop back into the upper 10s and low 20s.
Northwest winds will persist throughout the day with speeds around or just over 5 mph. The wind will go calm for a brief time this evening before turning to the south overnight. This will drive temperatures up, and some areas could be back to around 30 degrees by sunrise.
An area of light precipitation will spread into the area Tuesday morning and into the midday hours. Most of this will fall as rain, but some pockets of freezing rain will be possible. This will be most likely from Steuben County eastward through the Southern Tier, reaching north into areas of Tompkins County away from Cayuga Lake, and into Cortland County.
Just a light glazing of ice is expected in these areas, but that is all it takes to make for some slick conditions. Some or all these areas may see Winter Weather Advisories issued at a later time.
The steadiest precipitation should move out of the area during the early to mid afternoon, but a few rain showers will linger into the late afternoon and evening hours. Temperatures should stay above freezing Tuesday night, preventing any additional icy precipitation.
Wednesday will have rain and snow showers scattered about the area. None of the precipitation is expected to be significant or hazardous with temperatures peaking in the upper 30s early, then slipping back to the mid 30s.
Stronger System
A more significant weather system will move into the area on Thursday. Once again, at the onset, some areas could see some icy precipitation.
Like tomorrow, the precipitation should overspread the region from west to east throughout the morning hours. A little light snow with pockets of sleet will fall initially, but most areas will quickly turn over to rain.
Some of the same areas across the southeastern Finger Lakes that will see a chance for ice on Tuesday will see the same on Thursday. However, the most significant ice risk looks as though it will be to our east and especially across the Adirondacks and Catskills.
The heaviest rain across the Finger Lakes will likely come Thursday afternoon, with more scattered showers during the evening and overnight hours. Precipitation amounts should be around or slightly over a half-inch.
Cooler air will quickly move back in with highs Friday in the mid 30s after Thursday tops out around 40. Scattered snow showers and some blustery winds are expected on Friday, but accumulations will be minimal at most.
Saturday looks quiet, but there will be a weather system to watch for Sunday into Monday.
Temperatures should remain generally in the 30s through the weekend and into next week. There are some signs of slightly cooler air toward the final days of January.
