Increasing Sunshine, Temperatures
The complex weather set up yesterday that resulted in several areas of flash flooding in the Finger Lakes has developed into a well-defined area of low pressure that is pulling away from our region Monday morning.
There are still a few showers on the backside of this low across our region at 7 AM. Most of these showers were over Cayuga and Tompkins counties, slowly drifting off to the north-northeast.
No heavy rain is expected this morning, and the showers should gradually become fewer and farther between. Even into the afternoon, however, a stray shower cannot be ruled out, especially east of Cayuga Lake.
Meanwhile, to the west, the back edge of the cloud shield is also making slow progress to the north-northeast. Sunshine will very gradually build into the Finger Lakes, though some areas may see clouds most of the day.
Temperatures will vary from west to east as a result of the slow movement of the sunshine, with highs ranging from near 80 degrees in the northwest, to the low and mid 70s in Cortland County and the surrounding hilly terrain.
A steady, but still light northwest wind will blow with speeds of 5-10 mph. Dewpoints will fall into the 50s, coinciding with the arrival of sunnier skies.
Tonight, clear skies will continue to increase across the region with some areas of patchy fog developing. Overnight lows will range from pockets of mid 60s in the northern half of the region, to pockets of mid 50s in the southern half.
Tuesday will be a dry, warm day. Skies will be a mix of sun and clouds with southwest and west winds of 5-10 mph. There is a very small chance for a stray shower during the afternoon, but even these, should they develop, will not amount to more than a few minutes of rain.
High temperatures will jump to the mid and upper 80s. Higher elevations will probably end up just shy of 85 degrees, while some urbanized areas could flirt with 90 degrees. Syracuse, Rochester, Elmira, and Owego stand the best chance at hitting 90.
Humidity levels will remain on the comfortable side, with dewpoints mainly in the mid and upper 50s.
Tuesday night will be mostly clear until some late thin clouds with overnight lows in the low and mid 60s.
Slightly Unsettled
Starting Wednesday, there will be daily chances for rain heading into the weekend. However, there will be variations from day to day, and there should be plenty of dry time mixed in.
On Wednesday, a cold front will drop south into the region. This should knock temperatures back to the low 80s for an afternoon high.
A few stray showers and storms will try to develop along the front. Many areas will probably see little to no rain. Of the storms that do develop, however, there could be a small severe threat with a few strong wind gusts.
Low pressure will move along the front and lift it back to the north for Thursday. Showers and storms will be more likely and may occur at any time on Thursday. Still, the afternoon will be the most favorable time for storms, as usual.
The atmosphere does not look nearly as moisture-laden on Thursday, so hopefully, the flooding risk will remain minimal.
Friday may have a few showers lingering behind the front, but heavy rain is not expected. Most of the day will likely be dry for most of the region.
Temperatures will get a slight nudge on Saturday, reaching back towards the mid 80s. A few afternoon showers and storms will be possible, but again, many areas will probably not see much or any rain.
Sunday may turn out like Friday, with just a few showers and highs in the low 80s.
More of the same looks possible throughout next week as well, with daily highs in the 80s, but no excessive heat expected. Showers and storms will continue to be possible from time to time.
It is too early to tell when exactly, or how large of a threat any of these events will become. Most likely, the majority will remain benign.
