Weekend Weather Forecast
An area of low pressure along the Mid-Atlantic coast will throw some clouds and a few showers our way today before high pressure builds in for the weekend and beyond.
Much of the area is starting Friday out cloudy, though there may be a few breaks in the cloud cover here or there. Only a few stray spits of rain are showing up on the radar.
The chances for a few showers will increase this morning and into the afternoon, but the steadier rains associated with this low will stay well to our southeast. The rain that does fall today should generally be brief and light. Many areas will not see enough rain to wet the pavement if they see rain at all.
While all the region has a chance for these slight showers, areas east of Cayuga Lake have the best shot at seeing a few hundredths of an inch of rain in the bottom of the rain gauge today.
The day should end with some sun increasing from west to east, though a few areas may not quite make it into the sunshine before sunset.
Temperatures will set up with a northwest-to-southeast gradient today. Low 70s are expected in areas such as Rochester and Dansville, with upper 60s spreading south and east from there.
Mid 60s are expected for highs around Tompkins, Tioga, Cortland, southern Cayuga, and southern Onondaga counties as well as in some higher elevations of the Southern Tier.
Tonight will generally be clear, with a few clouds lingering in the east and valley fog in the usual locations. Overnight lows will stick to the low and mid 50s.
Saturday may have some resurgent cloud cover early in the day, and even a stray shower in the east cannot be totally ruled out. The afternoon should turn sunny as the low pressure departs and high pressure takes its place.
High temperatures Saturday should be a few degrees warmer than today, with mid 70s in the usually warmer areas and low 70s elsewhere. Only a few of the highest elevations will end up just short of 70 degrees.
Clear skies Saturday night will not lead to cool temperatures with overnight lows near 10 degrees above average in the low and mid 50s.
Sunny skies will dominate Sunday with widespread mid 70s and a few pockets of upper 70s.
Warm and Sunny Next Week
There will be no real change in the weather pattern until late next week. This means several more days of sunny, well above average temperatures to kick off October.
Some fair weather clouds are expected on Monday, but skies will stay plenty sunny, regardless. Temperatures will warm another degree or two over Sunday, with more areas sneaking in the upper 70s and a few probably hitting 80 degrees. Even higher elevations should be into the mid 70s.
Tuesday will be back to almost full sunshine with only a few stray clouds drifting through. Again, temperatures will add on a couple more degrees. The I-90 corridor and typically warmer valley locations will push into the low 80s, while the rest of the region makes it into the upper 70s.
The warming will probably stall out on Wednesday, with temperatures sticking close to where they were on Tuesday. Sunshine should again be abundant.
By Thursday, some thin clouds will start to move in ahead of an approaching pattern-changing weather system. Temperatures will still be very warm, but may be a couple degrees shy of Tuesday and Wednesday’s peak.
A cold front will arrive either later Friday or Saturday with rain during one or both of those periods. Whenever the front comes through, it will send temperatures back towards or even below average values. By next Sunday, highs may have a hard time escaping the 50s.
A generally cool, unsettled weather pattern is expected throughout the second week of October.
