Thursday-Friday Weather
A cold front passed through the region last night with little fanfare, but temperatures will be notably cooler, anyway.
The front is now stretched along the Eastern Seaboard with a couple areas of low pressure riding along it. While these will stay far to the east in terms of precipitation, clouds will likely stick around our area for much of the day.
The cloud cover may thin out enough for some filtered sunshine in the afternoon, and some far western areas may see skies clear out before the sun sets. For the most part, though, it will just be a cloudy but dry day today.
Northwest winds will blow with speeds just over 5 mph, importing the cooler air. Temperatures today will be 15-20 degrees cooler than yesterday with mostly mid and a few upper 40s.
Skies will clear quickly this evening as the coastal front moves out over the Atlantic. Winds will remain light but will take on a more west-southwesterly direction.
Temperatures will drop through the 30s this evening with lows across the southern half of the region in the upper 20s, and in the northern half near or just above 30 degrees.
After sunrise, winds will turn back to the northwest and increase with speeds of 10-15 mph on Friday. Sunshine will mix with some clouds. Wind gusts will peak at 30-35 mph.
The increase in wind should keep temperatures in check. While most areas will still be in the mid 40s, it will be a degree or two cooler than today, and higher elevations will be in the low 40s.
Winds will still be a bit blustery Friday night, but not quite as strong as the daytime hours. There will be fewer clouds as well.
Most areas will fall into the upper 20s, though some colder pockets will reach the mid 20s. The best chance for temperatures at or above 30 degrees will be near Lake Ontario, in the Syracuse area, and along the northern ends of Cayuga and Seneca Lakes.
Easter Weekend Weather
A weak area of low pressure will track through the region this weekend, passing nearly or directly overhead Saturday night.
Clouds will increase ahead of this system early Saturday morning. Some sun may filter through the clouds at first, but the clouds will thicken as the day goes on.
Rain showers will be possible late in the day, but the timing is still a bit uncertain. Some models show the rain arriving during the mid-afternoon, while others hold it off until evening. I tend to favor an earlier arrival simply based on my experience with the models often being too slow to bring precipitation into the area.
Temperatures will get a slight boost ahead of this low with highs Saturday ranging from the mid and upper 40s across the northern half of the region to the low and mid 50s across the south.
Rain showers continue Saturday evening, possibly turning to some snow by Sunday morning as the low passes to the east and cooler air moves in. A few areas may remain warm enough for mostly rain to fall, and those that do see snow should not see any real accumulation.
Some sun will be possible Sunday afternoon, but clouds ahead of the next system will be eagerly moving in before the sun is down.
Winds will be from the northwest on Sunday with speeds around 10 mph. Temperatures will mainly be in the mid and upper 40s.
Monday looks cloudy with rain holding off until Tuesday. Precipitation with this system may also end with a little snow later Wednesday, but this, of course, remains highly uncertain at this point.
Temperatures should go on a warming trend late next week and could become very warm by the following week.
There may be a couple of weather systems possibly moving through the area next weekend and early next week, so it remains too early to tell what the cloud cover may be like for the eclipse. Stay tuned.
