Strong Thunderstorms
It will be another hot and humid day today, but temperatures are unlikely to get quite as high as in days past thanks to an increase in thunderstorm activity this afternoon.
Several small packets of atmospheric energy will move toward the Finger Lakes region today, particularly during the afternoon hours. This energy will act as a trigger for showers and thunderstorms, which should be more widespread than the last few days.
Still, not all will necessarily see rain and thunderstorms today. In particular, the models are favoring the southern half of the area for thunderstorms this afternoon.
Though winds in the atmosphere are weak, the amount of energy present in the atmosphere from the heat and humidity will fuel a chance for severe thunderstorms once again. Damaging winds and nearly continuous lightning will be the primary threats, though torrential downpours could also cause some localized flooding concerns. A little hail is not out of the question, either.
The most likely time for storms will be during the second half of the afternoon into the first half of the evening.
Outside of the storms, high temperatures will reach the upper 80s and low 90s. With dewpoints in the 70s, it will feel several degrees hotter.
The overnight will trend towards quieter weather with lows around 70 degrees.
Temperatures on Friday will max out in the mid 80s, but it will still be extremely humid.
Another round of showers and storms is likely on Friday, a few of which will be strong. Southern and eastern areas are most likely to see storms, but everywhere has at least a chance for rain.
Some storms will be possible as early as the mid to late morning, but most of the activity will be during the early to mid afternoon.
Weekend Weather Details
Showers and storms are expected to pop up again on Saturday, focusing on the afternoon but possible at any time.
Overall, the coverage of the storms should be less than Friday, but still greater than the last couple of days.
A few strong storms will again be possible, as will locally heavy rainfall.
Saturday’s temperatures will be similar to Friday in the mid 80s.
On Sunday, an area of low pressure will develop over the northern Great Lakes and move into eastern Canada.
Stray showers and storms will be possible at any time on Sunday, but the greatest chance for storms will probably be late in the afternoon or early in the evening. Much of the area will stay dry until that time of the day.
Temperatures will inch upwards with fewer storms around during the peak heating hours. Many areas will be into the upper 80s with urban areas around 90 degrees. Low 90s are expected from Corning to Binghamton.
Monday will turn cooler and a bit showery, but the chances for thunderstorms look low. It should not be a washout either, with just occasional scattered showers. Highs will mainly be in the upper 70s.
A dry and sunny day is expected on Tuesday with highs returning to the mid 80s. Showers and storms are likely on Wednesday with a cold front.
Temperatures will take a dip late next week but generally dry weather is expected into the weekend, where temperatures will once again rise.
