Cooling Down

A cold front will move through the area today, leading to an increase in wind, showers, and eventually snow.

Skies are clear across the area this morning, but the weather will turn more active as the day goes on.

Puffy clouds will start to pop up during the later morning hours and the afternoon will have scattered to numerous showers throughout the region.

A few of these may contain some thunder, and small hail will also be a possibility as temperatures aloft turn cold while surface temperatures push into the 50s.

Most areas should see some rain during the midday or afternoon hours, though a few isolated locales may end up being missed.

Winds will start to increase from the west-southwest this morning, peaking in the afternoon as they turn to the west-northwest. Top wind speeds will be around or slightly over 20 mph with gusts of 40-45 mph. A few gusts may approach 50 mph over the Bristol Hills and west of I-390.

Temperatures will begin to fall back through the 40s during the latter half of the afternoon and will enter the 30s shortly after sunset. Rain showers will turn over to snow and become more widespread this evening.

Snow will continue overnight and into Wednesday morning, especially favoring areas along and north of I-90, the Bristol Hills, and the higher elevations east of Cayuga Lake. Many of these areas will see a coating of accumulation overnight into Wednesday, with some higher elevations picking up a couple inches.

The snow will only gradually diminish Wednesday afternoon and will still linger over Cayuga, Onondaga, Cortland, and Tompkins counties even into the evening.

Winds will be strong again, coming in from the northwest with similar speeds as today.

Temperatures will mainly stick to the mid and upper 30s on Wednesday, though a few areas, particularly in the Southern Tier where snow will be less common, may reach 40 degrees.

Temperatures Rebound

The cold air will not stick around long. After starting out near 30 degrees, Thursday will bounce back to the low 50s.

Skies will be mostly sunny throughout Thursday, with much lighter winds becoming even lighter through the afternoon.

By Friday, winds will swing around to the south-southeast, pushing temperatures up even more. Most areas should break into the 60s on Friday, with a few scattered showers here and there.

Saturday will also have some scattered showers as a cold front moves through. Still, highs will top out in the mid 60s before the temperatures start to drop.

Sunday will be another single-day drop in temperatures with highs mainly in the upper 40s. Winds will be light and skies will be a mix of sun and clouds.

Temperatures will jump right back up to near 60 degrees on Monday. A few late showers may be possible.

Most of next week will have similar temperatures, with highs generally somewhere around 60 degrees favored. There could be a couple days during the first half of the week that are warmer, and some days later in the week that are cooler.

Rain next week looks most likely late Monday into Tuesday, and again sometime around Thursday.
