Stalled Weather Pattern

A frontal boundary stretches from southwest to northeast across the Finger Lakes region this morning.

An area of low pressure is moving along this front and will help produce showers this afternoon.

Most of the area is dry this morning but showers will be possible as early as the late morning. At first, the showers should be especially focused in southern areas.

This afternoon, the showers will become more widespread. Some areas, especially along and north of I-90, may miss out on the showers today. Other areas may see multiple rounds of rain.

A few heavier downpours will be possible and some thunder and lightning cannot be ruled out. We should not see any severe weather, though.

With thick clouds most of the day and the front cutting off our supply of hot air, temperatures today will top out in just the mid 70s. Humid air remains in place though, with dewpoints sticking to the 60s. Winds will be nearly calm.

A new low will develop tonight over southeastern New York, keeping at least a few showers in the forecast through the night.

Friday will have showers throughout the day. The rain should be more widespread than today but will remain on and off. Again, a few heavier downpours will be possible but severe weather is not expected.

Clouds will remain in place throughout the day and high temperatures will only be around 70 degrees.

The rain showers will persist into the evening hours and will gradually become less common after midnight. Saturday, the showers will redevelop, but mostly just for areas near and east of Cayuga Lake. The late morning and first half of the afternoon will hold the best chances for rain on Saturday.

High temperatures on Saturday will mostly be near or just above 70 degrees, but if some sun breaks out quick enough Saturday afternoon, it could be a bit warmer.

Weather for the 4th and Next Week

Low pressure will continue to meander eastward on Sunday but should be far enough away to keep rain out of the area.

Skies will be a mix of sun and clouds throughout the day. One or two stray afternoon showers cannot be totally ruled out. Most areas will stay dry, and those that do see a shower will only have a brief interruption to the day.

Winds will be light from the north with speeds near or just above 5 mph. The extra sunshine will help give temperatures a small boost with highs in and around the mid 70s.

Sunday evening should continue to be dry with skies clearing. Winds will remain light and temperatures will settle into the mid 60s.

After midnight, winds will turn to the south and warmer air will start to stream back into the region. Temperatures on Monday will respond by jumping into the mid and upper 80s.

Monday will have the typical afternoon fair weather clouds. Like Sunday, a couple stray showers or small thunderstorms cannot be ruled out. Most areas should stay dry, though.

Low pressure will track across eastern Canada on Tuesday. Warm air will continue to push into the area ahead of the low and highs should approach 90 degrees. During the afternoon, a cold front will trigger showers and thunderstorms.

At this time, the winds aloft look weak on Tuesday, which should preclude a large scale severe event. Still, with the heat and humidity in place, a few isolated strong storms may be possible, much like Monday and Tuesday held this week.

Temperatures will retreat back into the 70s behind the front for the middle of next week.

Hey Drew, how’s it looking for Watkins Glen tomorrow afternoon/evening, specifically the track. Debating on going to the race tomorrow however don’t want to make the trek if it’ll be a washout or mostly rainy.

The most likely scenario is that it will be quite rainy.
