Cold Fronts Tonight and Tuesday Night

Monday will be another warm day across the Finger Lakes, but a cold front tonight will trigger a change back to cool weather.

Much of the region is starting off the week with morning temperatures in the 60s. Those that are starting in the 50s will soon join the rest of the region.

Temperatures will likely fall just short of reaching the warmth of yesterday, but it will be close. The main difference will be less sunshine today as clouds stream in ahead of the cold front tonight.

Breaks of sunshine will still be likely, especially through the morning and midday hours. Much of the cloud cover will also be thin enough to allow periods of filtered sunshine.

The clouds will thicken later in the day, but south winds will also help prop temperatures up. The result will be many areas between 75-80 degrees. Mainly the higher elevations of Cortland County and eastern Tioga County will probably not quite make it to the mid 70s.

The south winds will blow at 10-15 mph with a few gusts reaching 30 mph.

Most areas should stay dry this afternoon, but a few showers or thunderstorms will be possible in the western areas late in the day. This chance for rain and thunder will mostly be west of Canandaigua Lake and after 4 PM.

Rain and thunderstorms will spread further east this evening but will remain over the western half of the region. Any thunderstorms should dissipate by the mid-evening hours, but rain showers will continue eastward. The showers will become less organized as they move east, but all areas should see at least a little rain overnight.

By Tuesday morning, only a few spits of drizzle should be left in the area with the cold front off to the east. Winds will turn to the northwest as the front passes through with wind speeds of 5-10 mph throughout Tuesday.

Skies will remain rather cloudy on Tuesday with highs in the mid and upper 50s. Most of the day will be dry, but precipitation will move back in during the evening as a secondary cold front moves through.

This front will knock temperatures back into the 30s Tuesday night, causing rain showers to transition to flurries.

Cool Pattern Lingers

Flurries will be likely on Wednesday, especially throughout the morning hours. These snow showers will be on and off and lacking in overall intensity. Snow accumulations should be limited to a coating in pockets.

Even with well below average temperatures, any snow accumulations will probably not last the day with afternoon temperatures nosing into the low and mid 40s. Some breaks of sunshine will be possible in the afternoon.

Northwest winds on Wednesday will be stiff, coming in at close to 15 mph with gusts to 35 mph.

High pressure will build in Wednesday night, leading to clearing skies after midnight. Thursday should dawn bright and sunny but cold with lows ranging from the mid 20s to the low 30s. Only immediate lakeshore areas will probably stay above freezing.

Sunshine will be abundant throughout Thursday. Wind speeds will be near 10 mph in the western half of the region and near 15 mph to the east. Wind gusts in the west will be 25-30 mph, but closer to 35 mph in the east.

Even with the start to finish sunshine, temperatures will only manage to reach the mid 40s thanks to the blustery winds.

After another clear and cold night, Friday will be much the same. Sunshine will dominate from start to finish. Northwest winds will continue to blow but will be just a bit calmer than on Thursday. Temperatures should respond by breaking into the low 50s.

Dry and sunny weather will persist into the weekend as the cold pattern eases up. Saturday will be sunny with mid 50s and Sunday will have a mix of sun and clouds and low 60s.

Unsettled weather looks possible early next week, which could push temperatures warmer for a time. Beyond that, the temperature pattern looks uncertain for the first part of May.
