From Rainy to Dry

Low pressure is centered near the eastern end of Lake Ontario this morning, slowly spinning its way eastward.

On the backside of the low, a wind shift is acting as a focal point for more showers and localized downpours this morning. At 7 AM, this area of rain was moving through Monroe and Wayne county. The rain will track southeast through much of the Finger Lakes region, though some parts of the western Southern Tier may not see much.

Additional showers are likely surrounding this area of rain as well through the morning and into the afternoon. By 4 PM, most of the rain will be moving out of the Finger Lakes with just a few isolated sprinkles lingering behind. Until then, there should be scattered to numerous showers.

As the rain departs late this afternoon, some sunshine should work its way out. With northwest winds of 5-10 mph, the sun will be too little too late for much in the way of warming. Highs today will only reach the low to mid 70s.

Skies will clear tonight, and temperatures will drop back into the 50s. Areas of fog are likely, especially in the typical valley locations.

High pressure will nose in for Wednesday, bringing dry conditions and a mix of sun and fair weather clouds. Winds will remain from the northwest, but lightly with speeds around 5 mph. High temperatures in the afternoon will push into the upper 70s and low 80s.

Just a Few Showers

Thursday will be similar to Wednesday with a mix of sun and clouds. Winds will be nearly calm and from variable directions. Highs will push into the low 80s for most areas, and a few mid 80s will also be possible.

There is a very small chance for a few afternoon showers. Anything that develops will remain very isolated and brief. The most likely chances for one of these showers will be over the northern half of the region.

On Friday, a cold front will drop southeast through the region. Showers will be more common, but the rain will generally be quick moving and not as intense as what we have seen the last few days. This will keep rain amounts low. There are still some uncertainties to work out, though, such as the timing of the showers and if any areas will be more favored for the rain than others.

Behind the front, cool air will settle in for a brief stay. Highs on Saturday will be in the mid 70s with a mix of sun and clouds. A stray shower in the morning cannot be ruled out.

The chances for a few showers will increase on Sunday and Monday, but neither day looks overly rainy. Most areas will probably stay dry over the next week outside of today and Friday. Highs on Sunday will be back into the low 80s with mid 80s possible on Monday.

A better chance for rain will come into the area sometime around next Tuesday and Wednesday as another front moves through. Details are scarce this far in advance, but there is at least a chance for more rain than falls on Friday, but not as much as has been falling lately.

Early September, at this point, is looking mostly dry with near average temperatures mainly in the 70s.
