Cold Front Wednesday
A large plume of wildfire smoke from western Canada continues to linger over much of the Great Lakes and the eastern United States, including the Finger Lakes region.
Skies today will again have the now familiar tan haze. Also appearing in the sky will be some afternoon fair weather puffy clouds.
Some of these clouds may grow large enough for some isolated afternoon showers and rumbles of thunder.
If any small cells pop up, they are most likely to do so in the early afternoon across the western Southern Tier. From there, they will spread east and northeast during the mid-afternoon. By the late afternoon, any showers should begin to dissipate and move further east.
Most areas will not see rain today. Those that do should only see a brief period of rain.
Winds will be light today from the south and southwest at speeds up to 5 mph. Gusts will generally be under 15 mph.
Afternoon highs should be well into the 70s. Some of the normally warmer urban areas, valleys, and lake plains will reach the upper 70s. A few higher elevations may stick to the low 70s. Most areas will be near or slightly over 75 degrees.
Skies will be clear but smoky overnight. The south wind will increase to just under 10 mph with gusts of 15-20 mph. That will be enough to keep temperatures elevated with overnight lows in the low and mid 50s.
Temperatures will quickly warm Wednesday morning, reaching a high in the low and mid 70s during the late morning and midday hours.
Winds will turn to the north for the afternoon as a cold front moves through. Wind speeds will be as high as 15 mph with a few gusts over 35 mph.
Once the wind shifts, temperatures will begin to fall rapidly through the 60s and into the 50s for the afternoon hours.
There will be some limited rain with the front, but most areas will see less than a tenth of an inch and well under an hour of rainfall time.
Lastly, the front will sweep away the wildfire smoke, at least for a day or two.
Temperatures Recover
Skies will turn clear Wednesday night with north winds continuing around or just over 5 mph.
Nighttime temperatures will range from around 40 degrees across the northern half of the region, to the mid and upper 30s across the southern half. A few areas of patchy frost may be possible.
Thursday will be sunny with blue skies and few if any clouds. North winds will blow at up to 10 mph though, keeping temperatures chilly.
Most areas will not quite make it to 60 degrees on Thursday. The Syracuse metro area and the broader valleys of the Southern Tier will have the best shot at getting to or above 60 degrees.
Winds will be nearly calm Thursday night, so temperatures should be at least as cold as Wednesday night, if not a bit colder. The lack of wind will also increase the chance for some patchy frost.
The core of the cold air will move out by Friday, allowing temperatures to start their recovery. With another day of sunny skies, highs should reach the mid 60s.
By the weekend, temperatures should be back into the 70s. Low and mid 70s are likely Saturday, with mid and upper 70s on Sunday. Temperatures on Monday may flirt with 80 degrees in a few areas.
The models continue to trend away from rain for the weekend, though some clouds may build in, especially on Sunday. The best chance for a few afternoon or evening showers will come on Monday.
Rain may continue to be hard to come by even as we head into June next week, but temperatures will be warm with dewpoints in the 50s, so there will at least be a small chance for a few pop-up showers here and there.
Temperatures next week should remain at least in the upper half of the 70s most days, but could push into the 80s at times.
