Friday-Sunday Weather
High pressure will slide through the region today, bringing ample sunshine ahead of a more unsettled pattern for the weekend.
A few lingering clouds are still scattered about the Finger Lakes early this morning. These should quickly dissipate, leaving sun-filled skies for the remainder of the day.
Winds will be light throughout the day, meaning our warming will primarily come from the ample sunshine. Look for highs to be a few degrees warmer than yesterday, mostly topping out in the upper 30s to near 40 degrees.
As the high departs to the east, low pressure will move into the Great Lakes. Winds between these systems will turn to the south-southeast and increase substantially tonight. Between midnight tonight and noon tomorrow, gusts of 30-40 mph will be possible, especially over higher elevations.
The increase in wind will take temperatures from the mid 20s this evening to the low 30s by dawn Saturday.
Clouds will also increase overnight with a few snow showers entering the picture in the hours leading up to dawn. These will turn to rain early Saturday morning, but a few areas of ice will be possible during the transition. Be on the lookout for a few slick spots if traveling near or shortly after sunrise Saturday.
Scattered rain showers will continue for the morning before ending during the midday hours. This precipitation, whether snow, ice, or rain, should generally be light in intensity as it comes and goes throughout the morning.
Sunshine will increase Saturday afternoon as winds turn to the west. Temperatures will rise with most areas reaching 45-50 degrees.
Clouds will again increase Saturday night and winds will turn back to the south-southeast. Saturday night’s winds will not be as strong as Friday night’s, and temperatures should spend most of the overnight in the mid 20s.
Sunday will be cloudy with some occasional rain showers, mostly across the southeastern half of the region. The rain will be most likely from the late morning into the afternoon.
High temperatures on Sunday will generally be in the low 40s, though mid 40s will be possible along and north of I-90.
Next Week’s Weather
An unsettled weather pattern will continue next week, with temperatures generally within the norms of what can be expected for early March.
Monday will start the week off with a mix of sun and clouds. Late in the day, a cold front will approach with some scattered snow showers. Little to no accumulation is expected.
Temperatures should reach a high around 40 degrees before the front arrives. Behind the front, a little lake effect snow, or at least some lake effect clouds, will be possible Monday night. Temperatures will drop into the teens.
Tuesday looks to be sunny but cooler with highs in the 20s. Overnight temperatures should again fall into the teens with clear skies persisting until near dawn Wednesday.
A quick moving system along the coast may spread some snow into the area on Wednesday. Some light accumulations look possible, especially for southeastern areas. This system could just as easily stay east though, so it is not a certainty by any means.
Wednesday’s temperatures will depend on whether it snows or not, with low 30s if it does, and mid to upper 30s if the precipitation stays east.
Additional snow showers will be possible late in the week with some potential for accumulation. After a couple more days near 40, cooler temperatures in the 20s and 30s will settle in for next weekend. This looks to be followed by a period of above average temperatures as we head towards the middle-third of March.
