Weekend Weather
A large, stalled-out area of low pressure is spinning over the Midwest.
Far out ahead of the low, a band of unsettled weather is moving into the Finger Lakes this morning. Clouds and a few scattered showers accompany this band and will stick around for the day.
The rain today will remain light and spotty. Many places may not see more than a brief shower, if even that. The best chance for rain will come from the mid-morning through the early afternoon.
Some occasional breaks of sun will be possible, especially during the afternoon hours. Temperatures will vary by location, with eastern areas generally cooler, and western areas warmer.
More specifically, low 70s will be possible in and around Rochester, with mid and upper 60s likely for many areas. Low 60s are more likely near the Pennsylvania state line and along I-81 south of Syracuse.
There may be just enough in the atmosphere to touch off a few afternoon thunderstorms, mainly near and west of I-390.
Skies will gradually clear tonight, though the southern half of the region may hold on to at least partial cloud cover into early Saturday. Those clouds will depart during the morning, but a deck of thin clouds is expected to build in for the afternoon.
No precipitation is expected from these clouds, and they should be thin enough that some sunshine will filter through.
Despite the clouds, south winds will push temperatures back into the 70s, with highs Saturday ending up very similar to Thursday’s warmth.
A band of rain will move in from the southwest on Sunday morning, followed by a period of sunshine during the middle of the day. Temperatures should push into the upper 60s or low 70s, depending on the available sunshine.
This will trigger some afternoon showers and thunderstorms. No severe weather is expected.
Next Week’s Weather
Low pressure will remain in the Great Lakes through much of next week, bringing some occasional showers and gradually cooling temperatures.
At this time, Monday looks more dry than not with sunshine mixing with clouds. Cool air will not yet be entrenched into the region, so highs should reach the mid and upper 60s, depending on the sun.
A better chance for showers and maybe a thunderstorm will come on Tuesday. Temperatures will depend on the timing and coverage of any rain, but should end up in the 60s or perhaps upper 50s.
A few scattered showers will continue into Wednesday and Thursday. Skies will likely be rather cloudy, and cooler air will start to seep into the region.
Look for afternoon highs Wednesday to range through the 50s. Thursday will probably have higher elevations stick to the 40s, while lower elevations crawl just above 50.
By Friday, the low will start to break up. Showers will be less common and some breaks of sunshine will return. Highs should make it into the 50s.
Chances for sun will increase next weekend with highs possibly making another run at the 60s. Generally, though, temperatures should stay in the range of the 40s and 50s for much of the following week as well.

Hi Drew.
The water level in my small pond seems to be low by 6 inches this spring. Usually in April, it is at its fullest and the frogs and carp are happy campers. How far off normal is the precip, and is the soil unusually dry for April? Should I prepare for a dry season ahead and build a few more rain barrels to water my gardens?
