Late Week Weather

A large storm system that has been impacting the central part of the country will head east and bring unsettled weather to our area.

Clouds are in place across the area this morning and a few scattered showers dot the radar. Some of those may not be reaching the ground, though, with dry air hanging on this morning.

The chances for rain will remain low through the midday and early afternoon but will increase later in the day. This initial batch of scattered showers will mostly depart early this evening.

Sunshine will be minimal, but a few brief breaks in the clouds may allow for a few glimpses.

Winds will be from the southeast with increasing speeds. Morning wind speeds will be under 10 mph, but afternoon speeds will be 10-15 mph. Winds will continue to strengthen this evening with speeds of 15-20 mph and gusts of 35-45 mph. The highest gusts will be over the higher elevations.

Most areas will see a high this afternoon in the upper 40s or low 50s. Areas near Lake Ontario and in the hills of Central New York will stick to the mid 40s.

Evening temperatures will not drop much with most areas in the low and mid 40s. Those temperatures will hold steady through the overnight.

Rain will increase again overnight as well, especially between 1-4 am. Some brief downpours and a rumble of thunder will also be possible.

Much of Thursday will end up dry, though stray showers cannot be ruled out at any time. The best chance for a few showers will be before 9 AM and then in the evening hours. The evening rain is most likely east of Seneca Lake. Again, a few downpours or a rumble of thunder will be possible.

Some sun may poke out between clouds tomorrow, which will help temperatures get a boost. South winds will be the other influence on the temperature, though speeds will not be as strong as tonight.

High temperatures will end up in the low and mid 60s with evening temperatures falling through the 40s as cooler air begins to filter back into the area.

Turning Cold

Temperatures will settle into the mid 40s for Friday and Saturday. Both days will have plenty of cloud cover and some scattered showers. Some morning snow may mix in over higher elevations on Saturday.

Neither day should be a complete washout, but the clouds and on and off showers will make for a couple of dreary days.

Another weather system will dive southeast out of the northern Plains, bringing a reinforcing shot of cold air in for Sunday.

Instead of rain, this system will bring snow showers with highs on Sunday struggling to get to the low 30s. Blustery northwest winds will gust between 30-35 mph.

Some minor snow accumulations will be possible, but most areas should not see more than a coating to an inch.

Areas of snow will continue Sunday night and into the first part of Monday. By this time, lake effect may be the primary source of the snow, with localized amounts of a couple inches possible overnight.

Winds will increase further on Monday with widespread gusts over 40 mph possible. The snow showers will gradually wind down, but high temperatures will have a tough time even getting into the low 20s.

Both Monday and Tuesday morning will have lows in the mid 10s. Tuesday currently looks dry as temperatures make a slight rebound to the 30s.

Another weather system toward the middle of next week is likely, but it is too early to tell the precipitation type or types that this system will bring. The temperature outlook form much of next week and the following week is highly uncertain.
