Weekend Weather Forecast

Another area of rain moved through the Finger Lakes last night and is now north of the area.

This rain was associated with an area of low pressure, which will move directly across the area today.

As the low moves through, it will drag warm air northward before winds swing around to the northwest this afternoon and our cool down begins.

Not all areas will see equal amounts of warming today due to the path of the low directly overheard. In fact, there will be quite a variation in temperatures.

The warmest areas will be the broad valleys of the Southern Tier. From Dansville to Bath to Elmira and Owego, mid 50s are likely for a time early this afternoon.

Low 50s are likely in most other areas across the southern half of the region. Upper 40s are likely in the northern half of the region, but south of I-90.

To the north of I-90, mid and even a few low 40s will be the highest the temperature makes it today.

Skies will remain cloudy throughout the day, but precipitation should be limited to stray showers dotting the region from time to time.

Winds will be a bit blustery this morning and through the early afternoon, but will weaken after turning to the northwest. Peak wind gusts should remain under 30 mph with a variable wind direction, starting from the southeast then turning clockwise.

Tonight will be cloudy with areas of fog redeveloping. This will continue into Saturday morning before burning off.

Saturday will be quiet and cloudy with no precipitation and light winds under 5 mph from the northwest and north. Morning lows will start in the mid 30s and afternoon highs will be near 40 degrees.

Precipitation is likely on Sunday, moving in from the south during the morning and persisting throughout the day and into the evening. Much of this may fall as snow, but with temperatures generally above freezing, accumulations will be minimal.

The best chance for a few inches of slushy snow will be over higher elevations. Lower elevations, particularly along the lakeshores, may mostly see rain during the daytime hours.

Roads will mostly remain wet during the daytime, but some of the highest elevation routes may become a bit snowy if untreated. As the sun sets, more roads will start to get a coating of snow.

Near Average Afternoon Temperatures

Sunday’s precipitation will end before Monday morning dawns. A north wind will be in place behind the low responsible for the rain and snow.

The north wind will both keep temperatures down and produce some scattered lake effect snow showers throughout Monday. The snow is not expected to be heavy or particularly persistent. Accumulations should be limited to under 2 inches.

Temperatures on Monday will start out in the upper 20s and will only rise slightly to the low 30s.

Tuesday looks cloudy but quiet. The clouds may thin out enough to allow some limited sunshine to filter through at times. No precipitation is expected.

Morning lows on Tuesday will be in the mid 20s while afternoon highs reach the mid 30s.

There may be a better chance for some sunshine on Wednesday. Morning lows will again be in the mid 20s, but afternoon highs will be a couple degrees cooler than Tuesday in the low 30s.

The next weather maker looks due to arrive late Thursday with a mix of rain and snow showers., which should persist into Friday. Precipitation looks light and should not cause many interruptions to daily life.

Temperatures will remain in the 30s late next week and into the weekend. At this time of the year, most areas still have climatological average highs in the low 30s, so these temperatures are very typical for the end of January. Overnight lows will be a bit above the averages, which are generally in the mid 10s.

Beyond next weekend, the spread in the models becomes too large to hedge a guess one way or the other, with some models pointing towards chilly weather and others towards mild weather.
