Late Week Weather

A weak weather system will pass through the area today with some widespread light snow.

Before that arrives, however, there are a few areas of lake effect snow this morning. In particular, Cayuga Lake is producing a narrow but well-defined band to the south-southeast of its southern end.

This band extends through southern Tompkins and Tioga counties and is even making it across the state line into Pennsylvania. A very localized couple of inches will be possible this morning under this band and in any other hyper-localized persistent lake effect areas.

The rest of the area will see snow showers increase this morning and transition to some widespread steady snow through the afternoon. Most of this should be light, but there may be some embedded areas of heavier snow thanks to some enhancement off Lake Ontario.

Most areas should see just an inch or two through the afternoon hours.

Winds will be steady from the northwest with a few gusts over 25 mph, particularly in the afternoon. High temperatures will be in the upper 10s and low 20s.

The widespread snow will transition back to areas of lake effect tonight. During the evening, a large spray of snow showers will persist across much of the northern and eastern Finger Lakes with scattered pockets of snow across the Southern Tier.

Overnight, the lake effect will consolidate, mainly impacting Wayne County and areas east of Cayuga Lake by the predawn hours. The snow will persist in these areas through Friday morning, with a general 1-3 additional inches, though locally higher amount cannot be ruled out since the snow will be very fluffy.

Low temperatures overnight will be in the mid 10s with northwest winds remaining steady. Some areas of blowing snow will be possible.

By Friday afternoon, the lake effect will start to retreat to the northeast, mainly impacting eastern Wayne, northern Cayuga, and much of Onondaga counties. The snow will be light for the afternoon but may become a bit heavier in the evening.

Snow will remain in these areas until the predawn hours, when it moves out of the area. Another 1-3 inches is likely with locally higher amounts remaining possible.

Northwest winds will be a touch stronger on Friday with a few gusts eclipsing 30 mph. Nonetheless, most areas should reach or get slightly above 20 degrees for a high.

Weekend Weather Forecast, Next Week Preview

High pressure will build in for the weekend, keeping the weather quiet while allowing temperatures to moderate.

The shift in lake effect out of the area late Friday night will be due to a shift in the wind to the southwest. The southwest winds should become established by the early morning hours Saturday.

Clouds will remain overhead, but there will be breaks in the clouds that allow some sun to shine. The chances for sunshine will increase through the morning with mixed skies expected Saturday afternoon.

The southwest winds will be gentle with speeds mainly under 10 mph. Warmer air will build in with afternoon highs ranging from the upper 20s to a few pockets of mid 30s.

Southwest winds will persist through Saturday night, holding temperatures around 20 degrees.

On Sunday, the winds will gradually turn more westerly, leading to an increase in cloud cover. There may still be a few glimpses of sun, particularly in the morning. No precipitation is expected despite the increase in clouds.

High temperatures Sunday will be similar to Saturday, but many areas will find end up a degree or two warmer.

Monday will add several more degrees with morning lows in the mid 20s and afternoon highs in the 35-40 degree range. A weak weather system will swing through, bringing some rain showers with higher elevation snow mixing in. No snow accumulation is expected.

After a break Monday night with temperatures only dropping to the low 30s, rain showers will increase on Tuesday, especially in the afternoon.

This does not look like a heavy rain, but with temperatures climbing to near 40 degrees, there could be a small risk for some localized ice jams if enough rain falls.

Temperatures are expected to remain in the upper 30s to near 40 degrees Wednesday and Thursday. Wednesday looks dry, but Thursday will likely have some rain as a cold front moves through.

Behind the front, high temperatures will return to around 30 degrees for next Friday with a high degree of uncertainty in the forecast thereafter.
