Late Week Windy Weather

A large, mature low pressure system is located due north of the region over Canada this morning.

A primary cold front moved through the area overnight with showers and a few thunderstorms. A secondary cold front will arrive this afternoon.

This set up has the area quiet this morning with light winds and cooler, but not cold temperatures mostly at or above 35 degrees. These temperatures will mainly hold steady through the morning hours.

This afternoon, snow will start to develop, especially during the mid and late afternoon for the northern and eastern halves of the region. In the more southern and western parts of the region, snow showers are still likely but will be less steady.

Accumulations are expected to be limited to a coating to perhaps locally an inch or so as the snow continues into the evening before transitioning to more isolated areas of lake effect overnight.

Accompanying the snow will be a shift in the wind to the northwest and an increase in wind speed.

While the far western areas, mainly near and west of I-390, will see gusty winds all day, most of the Finger Lakes will see the strongest winds later this afternoon and into this evening. Gusts to 40, locally 45 mph are likely.

Temperatures will also start to fall during this time, heading into the mid and low 30s. The temperature will drop more overnight with a low in the mid and upper 20s.

Scattered snow showers from disorganized lake effect will continue overnight and into Friday. The best chance for snow showers will be in the typical northeastern areas, such as Cayuga and Onondaga counties. Only stray snow showers are expected elsewhere.

Even in the most favorable areas, additional accumulations overnight and through are generally expected to be under an inch.

After a slight decrease in winds overnight, sunrise will bring another increase. Winds through the mid-afternoon Friday will gust as high as 45 mph, coming from the west-northwest. Nonetheless, afternoon highs will be in the mid and upper 30s with a few warm pockets hitting 40 degrees.

Saturday will be cooler with highs in the low 30s. Blustery winds will persist, though should not be quite as strong as today or Friday. Only a few stray snow showers are expected.

Big Thaw Next Week

A more prolonged taste of Spring looks likely next week with a broad southerly flow across the eastern United States and a lack of significant weather systems to break the pattern.

Temperatures will start to nose upward on Sunday. After a cool start in the low 20s, afternoon highs will be around 40 degrees. Moderate west and southwest winds will combine with a mix of sun and clouds to get the warming started.

Monday is looking very sunny, though some scattered clouds are likely during the morning hours. Lows will start the day near 30 and highs will be in the upper 40s to near 50 degrees. There may be a brief period of gusty winds in the morning.

By Tuesday, Spring will be knocking at the door with morning lows in the upper 30s and afternoon highs likely pushing 60 degrees at least. Temperatures near Lake Ontario will likely be cooler. Skies will be a mix of sun and clouds.

It will be more of the same on Wednesday with highs at least near 60 degrees. There may be more clouds than on Tuesday, but it is too early to tell for sure. Rain seems unlikely, but confidence is low and a few showers cannot be ruled out.

The extent of the warmth for the second half of next week is still unknown, and it will probably not be quite as warm as Tuesday and Wednesday. However, highs in the 50s are currently favored, possibly even into the first part of the weekend.

Precipitation will become more likely toward next weekend with temperatures likely dipping further thereafter.
