Unsettled Through Saturday
A strong area of low pressure is situated to our northwest this morning over Ontario.
This low will track north further into Canada but will still drag a cold front across the region this morning.
Rain is once again widespread through the Finger Lakes this morning, surrounding the front. The rain will continue into the mid and late morning hours before dry air behind the front works into the area.
Winds will turn to the southwest behind the front, opening the door to cooler air. Temperatures will only drop today, with places already at their maximum daily temperatures.
The afternoon should turn out mostly dry. Clouds will remain plentiful, and temperatures will enter the low and mid 50s. The southwest winds will gust between 30-40 mph.
Precipitation will move back in from the west early this evening, continuing through the night and through Saturday morning. Most will fall as rain, but some higher elevation wet snow will also be possible with some minor accumulations. Wet snow may mix in at times overnight even at lower elevations.
The precipitation will not start to wind down until Saturday afternoon, when it will end from west to east. Areas east of Cayuga Lake may not see the precipitation totally end until nearly sunset.
Winds will turn to the northwest and increase on Saturday with widespread gusts to 45 mph and some isolated gusts to 50 mph.
Temperatures will be cool with morning lows in the mid and upper 30s and afternoon highs in the low and mid 40s.
Skies will clear behind the precipitation, so some western areas may see a little sun before it sets. Clear skies will then overtake the region Saturday evening. After midnight, winds will turn to the west and southwest and some new clouds will push in.
Next Week’s Weather
Sunday will start off with temperatures in the mid 30s with some sunshine filtered through increasing clouds. Winds will turn to the south and temperatures should rise steadily through the morning.
Afternoon highs will be warmest across the Southern Tier, where temperatures could make a run at the low or even mid 60s. The coolest areas will be along the Lake Ontario shore and in the hills south of Syracuse, where mid 50s are more likely.
A new, quick moving weather system will move in by Sunday afternoon. Rain showers are likely, and there may be a few thunderstorms in the warmer, southern reaches of the region.
The weather looks less active on Monday, though a stray shower cannot be totally ruled out. It should also be the sunniest of the upcoming days, nonetheless. Temperatures will mostly be just short of 60 degrees.
Warmer air will move in on Tuesday with gradually increasing and thickening clouds. Highs will make it into the mid 60s.
Wednesday will bring a chance for showers and a few thunderstorms with temperatures pushing into the upper 60s. Thursday will remain warm with highs possibly approaching 70 degrees.
Late next week, another large weather system will move in with a day or two of rain, followed by cooler temperatures during the weekend. Friday especially looks rainy.
The weather looks a bit less active for the following week, with temperatures slowly rising out of the cool weekend.
